Hey guys.
After a few tries, looking for some advise.
Im looking for some, preferably airbrushable, varnish that is close to 100% matte.
Ive tried a few, and the models are still shiney!

Testors Dullcoat is what you want. It's easiest to find in spray can form, but I believe it also comes in a non-aerosol bottle as well. If you have never bought it, be warned; it is expensive. The results, however, cannot be beat.

lol why gloss first then matte? that doesnt add anything except and other layer...

i use Vallejo's Matte Varnish and it works like a charm for me...
you just need to up the pressure to 25-30 psi because varnish is a little thicker then paint

Gloss is much harder wearing than matte; especially on metal models you'll find that if you gloss first you get better protection; also when the model starts to look glossy you know the top layer is being worn and it's time to give it another blast.

Generally glossing is useful for decals too; on a metal model with decals I'll have used at least two layers of gloss. If you're airbrusing it on properly there's very little thickness to each layer.

Matte is just as hard as gloss AFAIK. its just the finish thats different... (in case of vallejo varnishes) and i never had any varnish rub off anyway...
on the subject of applying decals on gloss i agree with you 100%. the smoother the surface your placing your decal on the better.

No, you'll find matt rubs off easier because of the rough surface making it more susceptible to abrasion. Gloss is by nature more 'slippery'. Usually the matting agent is a wax of some sort as well, and this also affects the hardness of the surface.

Definitly this.

Cheap as chips compared to using Testors sprays, in fact to most other options.

is W&N airbrushable?

I can deal with it not, but if it is it is +10 brownie points since i have about 300 men to varnish.

I airbrush it thinned as above.

It is fairly soft though; if protection is an issue a gloss coat (Klear / Future / insert good quality varnish) is definitely a good idea.
