I need help painting grey knights. I have an air brush and am using vallejo air gun and air steel for the base of the armor but it looks rough and uneven. Any help on painting them would be helpful, also any tips on painting battle damge.

make sure your primer goes on smooth. if your primer is going on fuzzy then obvs the next layers wont look any better.

if your primer is smooth then it's the paint. vallejo is really hit and miss for me. GW metals are the best IMO.

VAC metallics will gum up your airbrush really fast, make sure you stop to clean the tip often. They are also very thin and don't cover very well, if your not using a black undercoat i would suggest that and do multiple passes to build up the paint. hope that helps good luck.

Maybe you are thinning your paints too much.

Here's a link to a tutorial by Buypainted.com on Youtube. His tutorials are some of the best you can find, and I can't recommend them enough...especially if you're using an airbrush.

I paint mine with a basecoat of VMA Gun & VMA Black mix at 1:1. I then do a zenithal highlight of pure VMA Gun and another, lighter highlight of VMA Aluminum. Satin varnish on top of that, then add shadows wih a homemade blue/black wash. Finally, paint all the little details on the model.

Your metallic coats could be rough if you bumped the model before it was dry. Metallics are very vulnerable to damage, specially when drying.

a test run of the metallic paint on a standard space marine, does it look uneven or am i just being to critical?
