I was very suprised to see that you no longer designate a unit as moving or not... it's now done model by model in the unit.

In our test games this weekend, we quickly learned that everyone but the tac marine with lascannon could move and fire their rapid fire weapons, but the lascannon stayed put and got to fire at normal BS!

We found this to be very liberating on the field as compared to previous version.

(pg. 10) Which MODELS are moving
You may decide that only some of the models in a unit are going to move this turn. If this is the case, declare which models are remaining stationary just before you start movign the other models of that unit. Remember that models must still maintain unit coherency."

(pg. 13) Moving & Shooting
"Whether a model has moved or not can make a big difference to its ability to fire.... The most important thing to remember is that the effect movement has on shooting is applied on a model-by-model basis."

You guys come to the same conclusion? It seems shocking, but pretty straight forward.

Cheers,

Just remember that the unit still has to remain in coherency. But this works well if, for example, you deploy an SM squad with the heavy weapon in the front of the unit. You can then move the bolter marines closer to the enemy or into or out of cover, letting the heavy weapon fire as normal.

Interesting rule change.

Some Dark Eldar units that can take multiple heavy weapons just got a bit better!

I have found again and again that in encounter actions, the day goes to the side that is the first to plaster its opponent with fire. The man who lies low and awaits developments usually comes off second best. - Erwin Rommel

Yep, that's correct.

I could see a marine player with the lascannon in back, dumping fire then mid game repositioning all but the lascannon just to avoid a charge, claim an objective, etc while keeping the big gun going. Then, at an opportune moment, he may even elect to "snap fire" the big gun while on the move at a flyer so the whole unit can bolt that turn.

I just found this to be a supristing but very interesting change.

I also like it that a heavy weapon on the move is just as likely to make an AA shot as if stationary, so you might as well move them.

While the rules above do help Tac Marines, don't forget that the LC hanging out in the open could be hurt by Focus Fire.

Bit of a follow up...

HB Marine fires, but his squad mates want to charge. The HB Marine can't charge, but can his squad (provided the keep him in cohesion)?

Charging is done by unit, so if a model cannot charge, the unit cannot charge.
