What would be the cheapest way to get a competitive necron army going, I was thinking of starting with 2 battleforces as I have the original lord model, but dunno.

Any ideas from the webz?

ebay, most assuredly. Look for 'lot' (noun) sales, as in "This is a 100 piece 'lot' of warriors, destroyers" etc.

The webs would say this.

Common sense would say the above is cheaper and cool, but it requires more effort. Thus ebay or various other swap sites around.

Maybe I should have explained a bit more, I have no problem getiing new kits, I just don't want tons of stuff that's not needed.

As in, if I don't need 60 warriors, then would 2 BFs be enough, numbers of FA/HS/E choices, I like to be able to change up the army, but having a serious overload of models isn't my thing.

I'd say start with a single battleforce and one of the HQs; the Stormlord is a good starting point.

That will allow you to have 1 HQ, 3 Troops, a Heavy and some scarabs which is enough to get started.

Then, depending on your local meta, look at a Doom Scythe, at least one Spyder and some wraiths.

If you did all of that in one go, retail is around $260 US.

Craigslist.

Even if you wind up with lots of stuff that isn't useful to you, the price will still be low enough that it was easily worth it anyway.

EDIT: Also, if you use Anrakyr the Traveller as your HQ, then you can get tons of dirt cheap pre-painted models, and use them all together as a motley army from a hundred different tomb worlds that fits Anrakyr's fluff.

I assume you're probably joking. If not, I'd recommend you say you are. Dakka has a zero policy on thievery.

To the OP, definitely ebay for quick finds, Craigslist if you have a LOT of time to devote to searching, and the swapshop is great too. Try bartertown as well.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

For Necrons, the Annihilation Barge/Catacomb Command Barge kit is generally considered to be the most cost effective kit for what you get. If you build it as a Annihilation Barge, it gives you both a Overlord and a decently powerful heavy support choice. Alternatively, a CCB Overlord is quite powerful and when upgraded it can be quite the point sink if you want a cheap army. The battleforce is also very good, considering the price of the Ghost Ark alone (btw, I would strongly suggest building them as Ghost Arks, not Doomsday Arks).

The infantry then falls somewhere below those 2 kits. Deathmark/Immortals, Praetorian/Lychguard and Warriors all have a fair amount of bang for their buck.

Some units to outright avoid are the Ghost Ark and Doomsday Ark (which are expensive and not particularly effective), Triarch Stalkers (again, very expensive), and Destroyers (good, but expensive as you have to buy the individual models)

Well, it's really early to tell how the meta will fare, so, I can tell you this.

Generic Overlords on a CCB are still pretty good. You can read up on the Chariot rules if you like. With the changes to how Saves work, very few things outside a squad of TH/SS termies can take on a decked out overlord.

Troopwise, it's up to you. Gauss is very good now, thanks to the stripping of hullpoints and the change to rapidfire. It's up to you which choice you field. Keep in mind with Tesla Immortals, that every six on overwatch is actually 3 hits.

The Elite slot winners right now are Deathmarks and Triarch Praetorians. Deathmarks are fantastic snipers, that can help single out an enemy hiding in a block. They are also great for veiling around with a Despairtek. Triarch Praetorians went from Zero to Hero in 6th, thanks to their Ap2 Shooting, and AP 2 close combat. Paired with a Destroyer Lord, they are very very powerful.

Fast attack is pretty simple. You can't go Wrong with Wraiths. They were already very good in the last edition, and now they are even better with free Hammer of Wrath attacks on the charge. Any Necron list can benefit from a squad of 6 Wraiths, so don't hesitate to take them. Destroyers also got a huge boost in 6th. Gauss stripping Hullpoints, PE, They are really good now. A basic squad with just Gauss cannons can function as Anti-tank and Anti-infantry. I don't think we will be seeing scarabs as much anymore, and Tomblades just suffer from the other options being better.

The Heavy Slot has seen some changes. Everything but the Monolith is pretty viable. Doomscythes are powerful fliers now, Doomsday Arks are actually worth fielding. Annihilation barges are still a very solid choice. Spyders are good, but I'd only take them if you take Scarabs.

For our Dedicated Transports, Take Night Scythes, avoid Ghost Arks.

As I said, it's hard to say what a competitive army is, as the Meta is going to go through a serious shakedown, but You can't go wrong with Wraiths, and some barge boxes. THe barge boxes give you a free overlord, and you don't have to glue in the gun, so you can switch out the configuration, depending on how you like it. Your court/troops is almost entirely up to preference. I'd see what your area is like.

So, I'd say you'd be really safe with
1x Battleforce- I'd make the Ark into a Doomsday Ark. Ghost Arks are really not that good, even with the buff they got.
1-3 Barge Boxes
1 box of Lychguard/Triarch Praetorians. Build RoC Praetorains, and then use the leftover bits to convert Royal Court members from something like Warrior Sprues
1-2 Doomscythes.
2+ Boxes of Wraiths- These Guys will serve you well.

You'll have to figure out what kind Troops/Court members you want to take, as they are all good in their own way.

That's looking pretty good, so for arounk 2k pts, I'm looking at about $300, not too bad.
