I was thinking of clever marketing techniques for miniatures games. I remembered the old Pirates game (produced by WizKids) which I played one or two times as a child.
The way the game in question was marketed was clever, but wasn't wholly successful. I feel that by designing a similar game and widening the target audience, one could make a successful tabletop game utilizing miniatures that are inexpensive to produce and easy to sell.

I was thinking in particular of a game that utilized the same concept of constructable miniatures made of polystyrene card, however with more serious rules aimed toward a long-term fanbase. However, I would have the setting be something more flexible, like space battles between starships and the like or something like Dystopian Wars with land, sea and air units operating independently.

I wanted to know what actual gamers and modellers/artists felt about this sort of game and whether or not they would be interested in something like this.

Wormhole is sort of like this already. A detailed rules set of space combat but figs are printed on card stock and built. Since the printing costs are completely on the buyer it makes for an inexpensive initial investment.

Mech Attack is another neat game with print/play figs (and probably the best $8 I've ever spent on a game) that, with a little tweak, could be worked into a campaign system.

I know you're talking about pre-printed styrene models but I think too many folks will have flashbacks of Rocketman or Racer Knights or Transformers or Star Wars Pocket Models and steer clear. Print and play seems to be a better way to go.

I'd be more interested in a polystyrene miniature building set for RPGs.

You'd get a pack (Lets say for this assumption it's made by Wizkids/WOTCfor D&D 4e) for the Dragonborn Wizard. you get the half-dozen or so cards and punch out the stuff needed to assemble a full ~28mm model, semi-3D (Like arms fit into shoulders, possibly some sort of adjustable waist, whatever). The Dragonborn Wizard would include 1 or 2 cards of the Head, various helmets or headgear, and various hands (Which slot into the arms), varied for other races as appropriate, another 1 or 2 cards with torsos with robes of various types (For other classes, it might be types of leather or metal armor), and the remaining cards would be various weapons, spells/effects, and ~25mm bases with different designs.

The bits included would be semi-random (So for Dragonborn Wizard, you'd get the Dragonborn head/hands cards, but of a random color selection, the Robes of again a random selection, and the Spell effects/equipment of a random selection), but you could later buy "upgrade" packs (Also randomized) for Armor (Has random robes, random light armor, and random heavy armor cards), weapons/bases (Spells, melee weapons, ranged weapons), or Races (More random here as there might be >3-6 races to pick from).

They would be ~$4 USD per pack, but would allow customizeability and a colorful model with no skill needed, making it ideal for new RPG players or players who dislike painting. The collectability (And possibly a simple game using said figures) would encourage more than a single purchase, but the assurance of getting a (Race)(Class) model if you get the pack makes sure you don't have to buy 10 packs to get a usable Elven Rogue (Although you might need 10+ packs if you want the Drow Rogue with the Crystal Longbow on the Lava Base wearing the Adamantium Chainmail)

Imagine the feeling when you position your tanks, engines idling, landing gear deployed for a low profile, with firing solutions along a key bottleneck. Then some fether lands a dreadnought behind them in a giant heat shielded coke can.

Constructable games have been tried, but they've only been successfull as mass produced paper games like Pirates abd SW pocket models, or indie paper model games like Mech Attack where the customer prints and assembles what they want.

Incidentally, I think Mech Attack is a great game, but don't care for paper models, so I use it with Mechwarrior clix.

Ronin was a constructable game with miniatures. You bought a base mech and then customized it with booster packs but it never caught on.

I don't think it's particularly feasible as a a game that will appeal to TT gamers, as most gamers who want to use models, want real 3d models. Also, polystyrene is a fairly expensive medium in which to launch an indie game without major brand support.
