so I'm basically brand new to 40k and I play orks. So with the release of 6th edition would it make sense to start building up more shoota boyz? Are slugga boyz obsolete? I want to know what you guys think will be the most effective troop choice in the future.

Slugga boyz aren't obsolete, but shoota boyz definitely got a bit better due to the focus favoring shooting more. Take either and you'll do fine, but shootas are more versatile. Regardless, a power klaw/bosspole Nob is necessary for either unit.

I'm running 2 units of 30 slugga boys and 1 unit of 30 shootas. I would also suggest lootas with a Big Mek

I wouldn't put a Big Mek with lootas. If he's got a KFF they should be in cover anyway, and if he's got a SAG you don't want him to explode the squad! Also his strength is so variable; I wouldn't want to waste a weaker blast from a SAG on a tank while my Lootas shot it, or a powerful blast at infantry my Lootas were shooting.

Agreed.

Shootas are better; a PK/BP Nob is still pretty much obligatory, and I would not attach a SAG Mek to a Loota squad. He's better with a KFF if you take one anyway.

thanks for all the advice... like i mentioned I am like brand new so I haven't had that much battle experience, but i think lootas are my favorite unit in the codex.

I got 2 shoota mobs and 4 slugga mobs for my green carpet. When you hit 180 orks it doesn't really seem to mater shoota or sluga you just overwhelm them.

Shoota Boyz will definitely shoot more enemies to death, but that is not what is going to win battles for Orks. They still need to assault. I'm still going to run Sluggas and may not even shoot before charging to ensure that mine and their casualty removal together will not prevent me from charging.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

I'm not playing an a heavy terrain table as of yet (me and my friend are still getting that together) so the KFF has been to my advantage against his annoying amount of Large Pies from his Guard. I was thinking about keeping him in for the time being , but it seems that he may be better sooted else where any suggestions?

I personally love the SAG mek, but my armies tend to be glass hammers. I attach him to some grots hanging around on the backfield OBJ while laying potshots into enemy vehicles and infantry units from afar.

I have found that the KFF mek is much more useful if you have a very assaulty army, allowing you cover saves to get the boys a-krumpin'.

For the slugga/shoota debate, it is simple enough as shootas walk towards the enemy while sluggas take super durable trukks. Do you want to hitch a ride or walk your way across the field?

Do what I did:

1) Buy AOBR Slugga Boyz (Paying $23 at most, including shipping for a set of 20.)

2) Drill barrel holes in all the sluggas (the big shootas should be set aside for shoota boy squads, rokkit konvershuns, and the likes).

3) Use wire and tubing to create extended barrels that can be plugged into the slugga holes.

4) Enjoy the ability to have the choice between sluggas and shootas without magnetising or paying more for fewer boyz! (And it's okay to have a CCW and a shoota, because the shoota doesn't grant an extra attack!)

That sounds like it would result in a lot of goofy poses of Orks sticking guns out at odd angles single-handedly.
