Firing a template weapon at a charging unit with overwatch now does automatic D3 hit and we are told we don't have to apply the template to resolve the attack (BRB page 52).
That seems to imply that I can effectively shoot through my own units as the template is never used (it can never be over placed over your own units) and you get automatic hits.
Is this the right interpretation or am I missing something?
Sounds legit. Abstractly, you're fanning them as they get close to you. You don't have to worry about covering nearby friendly models, but OTOH you don't get to put down the template, which would often get a lot more than d3 hits.

that is correct, the position of the template weapon is not relevant when preforming an overwatch. it is assumed that the model with the [flamer] steps up to a proper firing position before dischaging the weapon.
I have a little hobby-thread going in the P&M section. Some say it's the best blog on Dakka, some don't agree, most belive it would be better if I finished at least one project some time this century and not just kept starting new ones.
