The new rule of search light allows me to searchlight after I shoot, so can I do that to units that I cannot hurt?

In which case you can never use the searchlight at all, since it doesn't inflict any damage 
Since you can obviously use a seachlight, target anything you want.

You don't target anything with the searchlight. It kicks in after you have resolved the shooting attack.

You needed leoharts quote in there to make, true, sense of my, admittedly inane, statement.
He was told he could only use the searchlight on something it could damage.

But can't I only choose to illuminate the target which I shot at. Can I shoot my stormbolter at, say Ghost Arks.

Of course you can. There's no rule disallowing shooting things you can't hurt. You won't hurt it obviously but that doesn't stop you from doing it.
There IS a rule on page 76 however stating you cannot assault a vehicle you cannot hurt.

The rules don't allow units to charge units they can't hurt, but they do allow shooting at things you can't hurt. And thus using searchlights as well. Also, due to being able to snap fire , non-fast vehicles can move 12" and still use their searchlights in the new edition.

I think you can charge something like a Wraithlord though, since it only specifies it's vehicles you can't hurt cannot be charged.

Pardon; you're correct. You're only forbidden from charging a vehicle you can't hurt. Not other units.
