Just had a revalation concerning the old bro hood champ. Now he didn't see much play in 5th, mainly due to superior choices and that measly one wound. But now with 6th and the era of challenges and characters, his uses are looking a lot more obvious! Beating down sergeants with sword storm, nailing independent characters with rapier strike then taking them with him if all else fails. Possible tarpit of Killy sergeants etc with blade shield? Anyone else thinking of giving him a try in 6th?

Dakka empty your thoughts here!

Short version: Brotherhood champion pretty much sucks in challenges. Reasons being:
1) "For the duration of the challenge, these two models are considered to be in base contact only with each other." 6e rulebook, page 64.
This means Sword Storm grants you grand total of 1 attack while in challenge with non-IC characters (like that sergeant).

2) Rapier strike only works against IC's and MCs.

You can use him to tarpit some otherwise strong character that lacks AP2, like Mephiston, with Blade Shield, but that's about it.

All things considered, I'd say he's worse off than he used to be. He really needs to either have Rapier strike amended to be able to hit characters or fourth stance that would give him 2 normal attacks at normal initiative.

Edit: Was supposed to write lacks AP2, not lacks AP3. Champion has 2+ save.

I was aware he only gets one attack in a sergeant challenge, but he is re rolling hits o the charge and re rolling wounds, hopefully with a hammer hand from his squad, that tac marine sergeant has a pretty reasonable chance of biting the dust.

If your Justicar doesn't have hammer, use him to challenge the sergeant if you get charge. 3 attacks that re-roll failed hits is better than 1 that re-rolls failed hits and wounds.

And chances of killing that Marine Sergeant are pretty low: 67% w/o hammerhand, 79% with it.
Justicar with charge gets 76% chance of killing the sergeant w/o HH and 88% with it.

Or alternatively just sit there blade shielding and pinning down their most valuable fighter while the rest of your squad takes down their hapless bolder wielding tac marines. You dont have to kill him to do your job... Anyone else seeing the applications of this or is it just me? I have been known to be a whacky so and so whose ideas only work maybe 5% of the time!!

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

He's a good character missile.

Shoot him into a squad that's bunkering a deadly IC or something. Issue a challange. If they accept, trololol the character with Blade Shield or Rapier Strike. If he doesn't, send the loser to the rear and trololol the squad with Bladeshield.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was envisaging. Not sure how viable it will actually be but we will see!

Next problem, where the hell am I gonna put him!?

I was considering taking him with a squad of gk termies as allies for my BT. Good to see some ideas come out of the woodwork here before I make the purchase.

You're in base to base in a challenge. Charge something nasty, challenge, cast nothing, and Heroic Sacrifice to take him with you when it kills you.

In The depths of a Tomb World, placing demo charges.

In 5th i've seen him troll a death company deadnaught with his re-rollable 3+ invo save for an entire game, i assume that in 6th thats still an option to protect your other squads from similar scary monsters/walkers.

Haha yeah, I imagine that to be quite fluffy as well, the brotherhood champion taking on the scariest nasties... Nade inquisitor and strike squad lead by the bro hood champ in a land raider is a unit I'm considering. The way I see it, giving nades and the champ to an already combat capable unit is a waste. That strike squad becomes damn nasty charging outta the raider, with nades for basic squads and the champ for beefy independent characters or monstrous creatures! What do we think to that unit?
