The Relic (boo)
He rolled pretty heavy for his terrain pieces, started building a Manticore hole and trees for his Catachans to sit in. I rolled pretty light but most of my army was in reserve anyway.
Table:
Turn 1:
So immediately after setting up and letting him start his first turn, I realized I lame brained and forgot to setup one of my Warrior squads on the field to activate my reserve Comm Array. Pretty stupid mistake but was too late by the time I realized what I did--so went with it and figured would try to dig myself out of my own stupidity. This would mean I got little to no fire out of my Barges first turn.
I setup behind my Aegis line for the inevitable first turn Guard barrage. Between the las cannons/Russ shots I lost a Barge first turn. On my turn, I scooted my Lord forward and went flat out to a flank--my other two barges had to float behind the Aegis line again to secure the comm array (He had the -1 to reserve roll Guard guy)---which cost me a turn of shooting.
His Turn 2:
His second turn one of his Vendettas show up. His Manticore manages to blow up the other barge and he starts focusing on my Lord's barge. I fail to make any cover saves here--and eventually he gets a good result, wrecking it.
My Turn 2:
3 of my 4 Night Scythes show up due to my reroll reserves (without this item, nothing would have shown up!). I scoot right up the middle of the table with 2 Scythes, unloading the Warriors. My third Scythe goes more to the middle with the Immortals/Trazyn so it can fire on the Vendetta. This was a great round of shooting for me--as I wiped two squads, pinned a third and blew up a Vendetta. One of my Tesla Destructors jumped a unit and killed 7-8ish guard by itself. He went to ground (I didn't realize forests gave a 3+ when you go ground) and saved some guys. My Lord assaulted a Guard unit, winning but they held.
His Turn 3:
No other Vendettas showed---and his Manticore/russ tore up my Immortals pretty bad. Rest of my units were pretty much unscathed---lost a few to
WBB but nothing big here. My Lord made his guard unit run--failed to sweep, which means they would be back to firing if I didn't go after them again. Rally within 6" and if you have 25% is a big difference!
My Turn 3
Fourth Scythe failed to show. Other 3 Scythes turned to criss cross the board--manged to do nada to his Manticore despite two Scythes firing into it. Third Scythe turned and finished off a squad. My Stormteks moved up with their Warrior squad and killed the Russ. My Lord killed a Russ, decided to let the Guard unit make a go at shooting next turn.
His Turn 4
I pulsed at the start of his turn figuring my flyers were going to take a beating this turn. Both Vendettas show up, unload their Plasma/Melta troops and tear up my Immortals/Trazyn combined with Rambo ordinance--down to 3 at this point! The other squad managed to drop my Lord to a single wound. Vendetta 1 scores 3 hits/pens on one Scythe--I evade for a 3+ and save all. Other Vendetta scores 2 pens--I evade for a 3+ and save all. Flyers intact (but flying off next turn). My Warriors are unscathed this turn. Lost my last Annh. Barge this turn.
My Turn 4
Last Scythe shows up--comes up behind the Vendettas. Other flyers go off board to return next turn. Drop my last warrior squad from the new Scythe next to one group of Plasma Vets--Trazyn and lone Immortal get ready to assault other squad. One Stormtek squad downs one Vendetta, it scattered on Marbo taking his last wound..
lol. Scythe shoots down other Vendetta. Warrior Squad with Stormtek that just arrived wipes Plasma unit, Lord finished off lone Lascannon squad--and then Trazyn trolled the last squad with; Mindschackle Scarab one guy in base to base, he proceeded to kill two of his friends, Trazyn kills 2 others, they run and I sweep. At this point he conceded.
General Thoughts:
Stormteks are very good, as are Night Scythes. Dropping warriors 30" away from your board edge with no scatter essentially is really, really good. My little "Night Fight + Jink" ended up working even better than I thought it would--and saved my flyers.
I love Trazyn's story so I play him---but I think the best option out of the
HQ is just a Vanilla Lord on
CCB w/ Scythe/Phase Shifter. Just a tough nut to crack and with challenges--you can really pull some funny stuff.
