Just ran into a situation that the Avatar of Menoth has "Spellward" so he cannot be targeted by spells, however a model next to him is targeted with a magical spray attack which clips him. So he is still able to take magical damage? There is nowhere that states he cannot be damaged by spells indirectly?

Bingo, targeting something else and getting the spray/aoe to hit the spell warded model is a good way around spell ward and such.

Always remember the most important rule in Warmachine/ Hordes: In nearly 100% of all cases rules do exactly what they say! Spellward only states that you can not be targeted by spells, it never says that your are completely immune to them. You dont have to guess what the rule does like in Warhammer/ 40K. They are usually very clear, no interpretation needed
