I have a dilemma...The Minotaurs are Greek themed as are Ultra Marines, are they the only Greek themed chapters?
I know Blood Angels are Roman themed so they are out of the question.

The Space Wolves are pretty much like space vikings, with the White Scars being mongols.

Hmmm...it seems to be a mash-up, power weapon wise I see the Gladius(roman) mostly, but "Ultra" itself is of course Greek, and their Iconic "Ultra" U is on almost everything except toiletries. Hmmm, but perhaps you are right, they are a bridge between Greek and Roman?

I'm guessing the black templars are based off the crusading knights under Richard the Lion-heart?

Ehhh I'd actually say they're much more based off of the Teutonic Knights in the Baltic. Though their color scheme is more on the Hospitallers. I suppose they're just crusaders in general though

I'd say more like the Teutonic Knights. They've got a much more germanic theme going on, not to mention the whole color scheme they got going on.

I would have to lean more towards the Romans with the Ultramarines in regards to how they fight, for one they are one of the most skilled chapter in wielding the Gladius. Also the Ultramarines strict adherence to the Codex Astarstes in use in combat is pretty roman, sticking to a number of predetermined tactics and not improvising right on the spot. (Well the Romans obviously improvised much more than the Ultramarines would but you get my point)

Who are the Iron Hands then?

in Inquisitor, a Space Marine can take a krak grenade, pull out the pin, eat the grenade, throw the pin, and the thrown pin will actually kill a normal man, whereas the Space Marine won't even have indigestion. This has actually happened in a game. Hell, a marine can throw his bolt shells and do more damage than by shooting his boltgun

Iron Hands are based on actually I have no idea. They are one of the few that I don't know about.
They are probably the only ones in history that revere everything mechanical.
Wait, now they sound like the Catholic church.

I know Blood Angels are Roman themed so they are out of the question.

To get into specifics, the Minotaurs are more Minoan/Spartan/Archaic in style, while the Ultramarines' theme is more a generic Classical Graeco-Roman one.

The Blood Angels are very definitely faux-Renaissance Italian, not Roman.

Yeah, called the "Tale of Two Heads Talking". Librarian Two-Heads Talking, Sergeant Lame Bear and a Cloud Runner return to their homeworld, called the Plains World, for recruiting when they discover the planet has been overrun by genestealers. The basic outline is here.

Also in Gav Thorpe's Angels of Darkness they recruited from tribal societies, and the recruitment cullture does deffinately affect much of a chapters culture

You have a quite acurate guess there.

About the black templars, I'd say that they are more based on templars (warrior priests) than crusaders.

The Mortifactors are also have a very tribal shamanistic theme but its closer to Cannibal Tribes of Africa where they revere the dead and eat flesh to gain the power of their enemies. Could also be Aboriginal based as the "Chaplain" was able to take a spirit walk during a battle to recon. This information is from the Ultramarines book series.

Astral Claws have Mesopotamian origins, aesthetically.

Space Sharks are similarly aesthetically influenced by Pacific Northwest tribal art.

Wait, the Knights Templar don't count as Crusaders?

That said, they ripped the Knights of St. John/Hospitaller's logo and are based off of the Teutonic Knight.

The updated space sharks are based on Maori warriors, at least visually.
