I've read in other threads that he cannot be challenged if he joins a unit as he's not a "character" in the new Rulebook appendice. His entry in the Codex does describe him as an independent character which I understand makes him a "character", hence challengeable (3rd paragraph p.63 of rulebook).
Am I misreading something? Can someone clarify this?

There are 2 types of Characters. ICs and regular Characters.
