Here's the situation; I currently have two armies (Imperial Guard and Necrons). I have one opponent who collects Orks and Dark Eldar. I've had enough of avoiding CC and blasting away all the time. I would like to start an army that is not only capable of effective hand to hand but actively seeks it. I am flirting with Blood Angels (deep striking dreads, assault marines, and some predators seems super fun).

Also, I don't really care for special characters or cheese. I don't much care who wins the battles, but I want to be competitve.

All suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

Black Templars FTW. Black Tide, LRC Termi Rape Train, good times.

Black Templar to me seems the most fun to play with for a CC army. But competitive wise Blood Angels are pretty good with DOA lists and if you are in to having a ton of infantry that you don't care about losing (I see you play guard, you know what I'm talking about ) then Hormagaunt tyranid lists have always sounded fun to me.

Chaos is set to get a new codex, and they have always had good CC builds. World Eaters took a hit from no +1 initiative to FC, but are still a CC army.
