This year's Chronicle offered an inventive contrast to the standard superhero film, so naturally the push has been on ever since to get director Josh Trank behind the camera of a standard superhero film as soon as possible, if he thinks he's so smart. Most recently Trank was in talks to direct the Spider-Man spin-off Venom for Sony, but today Deadline reports that his next project will actually be Fox's long-discussed Fantastic Four reboot—a film the studio is fast-tracking (much like its still-gestating second stab at Daredevil, which just lost its director) in order to prevent the rights reverting to Marvel and Disney, who have so far selfishly hoarded far too much of the Marvel superhero money by making superior movies. Trank would help combat that tyranny by directing from a script by Green Lantern writer Michael Green, lending his unique sensibilities to totally reinventing the franchise from its two middling mid-'00s incarnations, or maybe just trying an origin story again without Jessica Alba. "Hey, whatever it takes, just as long as it fulfills those stipulations on the intellectual property rights before they're returned to their original owner," no fan is saying anywhere.

Nothing like the time and care put into making film based purely on retaining ownership of proerty rights at the last minute. I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't seem like they wait till the last minute and then throw something together. Of course, this is nothing new.

Spoiler:

I actually didn't hate the other FF movies. They weren't great, but they had their moments. I thought most of the actors were good for their roles, but that a few poor decisions, such as making The Thing be a guy in a suit (and even then, having it actually be Chiklis in the suit, who isn't a big guy) instead of a huge bit of FX, held the movie back. While the portrayal of Galactic was questionable, though I thought it wasn't to bad since having a giant purple guy floating in space would probably have looked a bit silly, the Silver Surfer was well done.

Or, this might have all been an excuse to post the trailer for the Roger Corman FF movie that was never released.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Silver surfer was cool ; Alba was hot (but is such a bad actress).

I'm not sure I actually remember anything else about those 2 movies. Like, I know I've watched them, and more than just a few times, thanks to Showcase's habit of spamming the same movies every months or so. But nothing memorable about them. Oh it was hard to take Doom seriously when all I could think about was the sex-crazed doctor in Nip/Tuck. And that whole thing about the marriage getting repeatedly cancelled was just so frakking annoying, almost made me regret Alba being in there...

Maybe a remake will make me care ... maybe... ?

I don't think the Fantastic Four has the crossover appeal necessary for it to be a mainstream hit ever. The characters are just too corny.

Agree with Amaya. Fantastic Four is really old school. Like the Doom Patrol.

Is it just me, or does that actually look rather fun? I dig the classic music, it reminds me of the older, original series that ran on TV back in the 80s (The Six Million Dollar Man, Wonder Woman, etc), and even today I still like watching that original Flash Gordon movie (way better than the silly re-imagined TV series). I don't really need fancy FX as long as a movie manages to have a certain "charm".

The concept of "ashcan copies" is horrible, though. What a shady stunt - I can't believe this is actually legal. Law should force companies to distribute their stuff if they want to retain any claim to a franchise.

Sadly it needs to all go back to Marvel, as they'd be better off being the Future Foundation.

Or at least giving the option to mix in other super heroes with out removing the ability for them to be in other Marvel film.

Seemed bizarre that Marvel couldn't just call the race in Avengers the Skrull because the rights where with the Fantastic Four.

I will never forgive the F4 movies for ruining my favourite Superhero; Dr Doom.

Julian McMahon actually wasn't too bad, but the voice acting when armoured was poor.

Fantastic Four suffers in comparrison to The Incredibles which nicked the powers and family element and did a better job with it.

That's kind of the problem really. FF seem a bit cartoony compared with other superheroes. Maybe they'd be better off doing something set in the 50s/60s like X-Men First Class.

Indeed. The Incredibles is my favourite F4 movie yet (in addition to nicking their powers, their villain is very similar as well).
Similar to how Galaxy Quest is one of the most popular Star Trek movies after Wrath of Khan and First Contact.

That had never occurred to me before, though now you point it out, it's bloody obvious (I don't follow Marvel, so forgive me). What I did find very noticeable was the extent to which The Incredibles borrowed its themes from Watchmen.
