I agree that contrast is key. You want a basing scheme that both looks good, AND causes the model to "pop", rather than blending with it.

With that in mind, I would recommend going with either a traditional earth & grass mix, or with snow bases. Earth/grass is easy to make look good, if you haven't done much basing in the past.

I would say go with a basic approach of mixed-weight sand, painted a medium-brown and drybrushed a lighter brown/bone, then some green and/or yellow grass on it. This will give a good contrast with your dark-schemed daemons.

You can then add little tweaks to it to suit the specific daemons you're using. For example, with the bloodletters having this glowing coals look, you could paint red/black burning footprints on the base, and/or paint any grass that's close to/touching the legs black/grey, like it's been scorched by them. If you're fielding nurgle daemons, you can instead have them dripping noxious slime- and paint little drips of slime/acid corrosion on the grass and earth of the base. Tzeentch units could have little patches of purple or blue flame around them, and/or be mutating the grass that touches them into unnatural colors.

Just some ideas, anyway.
