Well, I was sitting at the airport the other day with time to spare, so I decided to cobble this together. My previous efforts about British and American history highlighted an alarming level of ignorance amongst the fine members of this forum Imagine not knowing about Dallas...
Now, I've always been impressed by the military knowledge of certain members of this site, so I wanted to see how good you guys really are with a subject that is much discussed on this forum.
I'm expecting everybody to get at least 80% of the answers right. Anybody who fails shall be locked in a cell and forced to listen to Cliff Richard records non-stop (If you're in the UK) or covered in barbecue sauce and thrown into a pit of weiner dogs (if you're American) If you're not British or American, then I'm sorry, maybe you'll get lucky in the next life
Anyway, enough of my yakking. Answers are at the end of this quiz. And as usual, I don't want to hear BS about historical context!!! We'll start with some easy questions.

1. Arthur Wellesley by Goya IIRC 2. Martin Van Buren was a lawyer by trade and never a soldier, I assume that's what you were driving at, but he was also the only POTUS who spoke English as a second language. Dutch being his first.
3. The SMLE in various Numbers and Marks.
4. Respectively: a medium tank, recce tank, tank destroyer x2.
Edit upon seeing your answer key you have a rather wider definition of AFV than I do.
5. Reporting names for Japanese aircraft
6. German High Command, by telegraph.
7. The invasion of Crete by Germany
8. 401 BCE
9.Vemeiro(somewhat related to 1?), Talevera, Bussaco, Vitoria, and Salamanca.
Edit: good enough for government work.
10. The first one is the Black Watch, the second the RM...past that I've no clue.
11. Hannibal Barca in 216 BCE
12. Alexander III of Macedon (Zie Great if you must). In Either late 333 or early 334 BCE. I'd lean to 333.
13. The most ridiculous sniper evah! The Finn that made Russia pay for invading in blood.
14. IDK 15. The Thirty Years War
16. The RussoJapanese War?
17. GEN Oliver Smith Chosin Resivoir
18.4,3,1, 2 Edit: in the Waffen SS more SGM than SGT.
19.Japanese Spear (and an Atari game), Japanese Sword, Scottish(Irish...who can tell? Something something worn with a skirt) Dagger. I suppose "Gaelic" or even "Celt" would be more correct.
20. Lolwhut. Captain Make Beleive I suppose. If there was a British presence at midway it sure as gak didn't sink two carriers.

1) My avatar contains a portrait of which commander? Painted by?
Sir Arthur Wellsley. Painted by some Dutchman?
2) Odd man out: Eisenhower, Grant, Van Buren, Hayes, Jackson.
I'm guessing one of these was not an American general. Eisenhower, Grant and Jackson definitely were. Hayes I have never heard of. I think Van Buren was a civilian...
3) What was the British Army’s standard rifle from 1895-1957?
The Lee Enfield
4) What were: Panther, Lynx, Elefant, and Nashorn?
Panzerkampfwagen V Medium Tank, A British Helicopter, a German Tank Destroyer based on the Porsche Tiger's chassis and another German Tank Destroyer (open-topped)... I'm unsure of the chassis.
5) What were: Emily, Kate, Dinah and Sonia?
Unsure. But Emily and Kate were two American codenames for referring to Japanese aircraft.
6) What was OKW?
Something like Oberfeld Kommand die Wehrmacht or something like that. German High Command of the Armed Forces? I may be wrong as I get the impression that there was also an OKW and OKE for commanding the West and East respectively.
7) What was Operation Mercury?
The relief of Malta? 'The Last Convoy'... might be wrong.
8) In which year was the battle of Cunaxa fought?
Bleh?
9) List these battles of the Peninsula War in chronological order: Salamanca, Talavera, Vemeiro, Vitoria, Bussaco.
My Sharpe DVD boxset isn't to hand at the moment...

Per Mare Per Terram, In Arduis Fidelis, Dirty Half hundred.

The Cannae Openers?
12) Who won the battle of Issus and which year was it fought in?
Some dude from antiquity.
13) Who was Simo Hayha?
A Finnish sniper who achieved something like 800 kills in two weeks during the Winter War.
14) Which two sides fought against each other in the Battle of Mohacs?
Indians and Europeans...
15) The treaty of Westphalia ended which conflict?
The War of Austrian Succession?
16) The treaty of Portsmouth ended which conflict?
The Civil War?
17) Who said: “Retreat, hell! We’re not retreating, just advancing in a different direction.”
18) Of the following ranks of the Waffen SS, which is the highest and which is the lowest: Hauptsturmfuhrer, Hauptscharfuhrer, Sturmbannfuhrer, Standartenfuhrer.
I'm smelling a scarily Germanophile trend in this post... Sturmbannfuhrer = Major, Hauptsturmfuhrer; no idea, but Haupt makes me think of Captains... So I guess:
Standartenfuhrer, Hauptsturmfuhrer, Hauptscharfuhrer, Sturmbannfuhrer
19) Identify the following: yari, nodachi, sgian-dubh.
Hooray for Shogun 2! Spear, Two-handed sword, a typo.
20) During WW2 who commanded the British fleet which sunk two Japanese carriers at Midway, and allowed the American carrier Yorktown to retreat to safety?
Nelson II.

Well done to Auston. That's the kind of effort I was aiming for. A few minor points:
Yeah, Van Buren spoke Dutch and he was the first President to be born a citizen of the USA, damn it, this is a military quiz!!! As an interesting aside, Hayes is one of the few presidents yet to appear on a US banknote.
Anybody who plays FOW should get the WW2 questions correct. If not, they should be tied up and forced back into a GW store!! I'm assuming that most people quit GW for FOW ( i did anyway)
Always beware the trick question. Midway was a British victory! The rubbish they teach to American youth these days

You did, just now.
18) Of the following ranks of the Waffen SS, which is the highest and which is the lowest: Hauptsturmfuhrer, Hauptscharfuhrer, Sturmbannfuhrer, Standartenfuhrer.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
I am disgusted by this site and the members that are part of it! I was worried that people were going to say this quiz is too easy. I was contemplating a life of exile away from this site. Now I find (with a few notable exceptions) that most people haven't even heard of Midway!!! Hang your heads in shame!!
As for the Van Buren thing, is he the only POTUS not to have had a first lady??
