I have been musing on the creation of my own space marine chapter, with the right blend of uniqueness and adherance to the codex to make it believable, so here we go C&C welcome.
The Knights Draconis are a codex chapter of a later founding, with the main differences being recruitment and advancement within the chapter. They are firm believers in the holiness of the Emperor and are staunch defenders of the faith. The chapter is inspired by a medieval theme, and very central to the culture of the Knights Draconis are great tournaments that test the skills of the combatants through various events such as marksmanship, swordsmanship, tactics, vehicle prowess.
Such tournaments are held on the chapters homeworld of Gavenhelm, an agri-world on the edge of imperium space, plagued by great beasts resembling the dragons of legend from which the chapter takes its name. The world has no planetary governor instead being ruled by the chapter master whos title is King.
There are ten major settlements on Gavenhelm each watched over and ruled by a company of the Knights Draconis, when a male youth of potential reaches the age of 12 he severs all ties and is taken as a squire to a member of the company that watches over his township.
From the ages of 12-18 he is instructed by the Knight on the various arts of warfare and strategy as well as overall education. When a squire reaches the age of 18 he is ready to compete in the Tournament of Embers; each township sends 3 of its squires to compete at the capital though only one from each township may continue on, and in some cases no aspirants from a town will be deemed worthy. Many citizens of Gavenhelm and Knights Draconis gather to watch and preside over the games and it is a great honour for a township and mentor to have his squire chosen. Strong rivalries exist between companies and even between mentors within the same company, creating a high standard for all entrants. Those not chosen go on to join the planetary defense force the Dragons Tail.
When a squire competes in the Tournament of Embers and is deemed worthy he goes on to become an Armsman for the chapter, very similar to the scouts of other codex chapters. Armsman perform typical scout duties as well as acting as the police force on Gavenhelm sharpening their detective and reasoning skills as well as their combat skills. When one has been an Armsman for two years he is fully inducted in the Chapter as a Knight.
The Chapter also holds other various tournaments at regular intervals for the chapter members only, the winners of which are named Champions and go on to lead squads of Knights or be taken into the 1st Company, the Dragoons.
Once every 5 years the Knights Draconis host a major tournament open to all comers from all worlds. Many space marine chapters send representatives to compete, for it is for this tournament that the dragon species of Gavenhelm is preserved.
Including many major events and culminating in an event of single melee combat with a dragon, this tournament is a spectacle many flock to see even all the way from Holy Terra.
Chapter organization follows the Codex Astartes for the most part with different naming conventions.
