So I'm finally starting to read the Horus Heresy books. I'm just wondering have I started to tread down a dark path of book addiction as I attempt to catch up , and does the book series skew off from the fluff at all?

Its a pretty good series, and is very interesting to read... you should definetly read it, and as far as I know, it dosen't skew from the fluff all that much...

That depends on what you consider background. If you only ever look at codices than it's probably not going to be what you expect.
Personally, the HH books are the background so there's nothing to skew from.

Yeah but after the 3rd book its kind of getting random and branches off. Meaning it definitely doesn't get to the point. We skip around to different chapters finding out what they were doing in the heresy. Eventually all leading into one big climactic ending with horus getting his face punched in. A work of art.

Read the first five books.
Horus Rising, Galaxy In Flames, False Gods, Flight Of the Eisenstein and Fulgrim. After that, you're free to tread through whichever HH books you wish. There is no particular order after the first five as the framework is set and the narrative is free to be filled.
Personally; I enjoyed Know No Fear [Ultramarines] and Deliverance Lost [Raven Guard] a lot. The literary value is never that high in the BL books but it's not what I read them for. If I want an intelligent read, BL is the last thing I'll pick up. If I want Space Marines, kick-ass and daemons, it's the first call.

I'd say all worth it apart from the Dark Angel ones, but I really need to give them another try...
