On page 38 for Hit & Run, “immediately moves a number of inches in the chosen direction equal to the 3d6 result”. I find the quoted section to be ambiguous as to what should happen.

For Example, “immediately moves the number of inches in the chosen direction equal to the 3d6 result”.

Implies the unit must move the entirety of the distance rolled. Using indefinite and definite wording within the same sentence confuses me on what the intent should be. This stood out to me because the 5th edition version was indefinite (<= 3d6) while the intent of this version seems to be definite (= 3d6).

If you roll 12" on the 3D6, and only move 11", you have not moved a number of inches equal to 12

Apparently YMDC is where English majors hang out these days as we've had quite a bit of this variety of thread around here lately (did Starbucks go bankrupt or something)?

English majors have it easy. With math proofs every word used is important.

Movement in nearly every other case is strictly up to your max movement distance only case where not i canthink of is falling back

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Mahtamori - this is another one, as it is essentially a special fall back move. Move a number of inches equal to the 3D6 roll is unambiguous.

If that was the case it would read:

“immediately moves a number of inches in the chosen direction less than or equal to the 3d6 result”

People probably look at article usage as an inane argument but it does change the meaning of the rest of the sentence.

Such a change between Hit & Run from its 5th to its 6th, versions has a subtle impact to the game with random charge lengths. If the unit attempting to do a Hit & Run and rolls more than a 13 as their result then there is a very high chance they are not getting back into close combat next turn. Whereas in the case with the 5th edition version the controlling player had the choice of placing the unit in the most advantageous distance between the lengths of min away from enemy and max allowed distance.
