If i put a vampire in a unit of black knights do they still have to be within 12" of the general to march? If they cant march it seems i may as well throw down for some blood knights.

Yes, unlike the 7th edition book, you you need to have a unit within 12" of the general to march, not just any vampire.

However, if the unit is entirely vampires, like Blood Knights, they can still march any time.

Well turns out blood knights have frenzy so they are a horrible option to control a flank. maybe some cairn wraiths or something will do...I have a fair amount of magic in my army to defend them maybe.

The no marching without holding the generals hand thing seems like a huge weakness for the army, what do vc players do to counter this?

Remember with frenzy you have to fail a LD check for you to automatically attack the nearest enemy, and AFAIK Blood Knights' LD is pretty high.

As for getting past the restricted marching, it's just a matter of having everything you really want to get to the enemy first in the center near the general. Generally I have the stuff such as the Varghulfs or Dire Wolves (which the Varghulf can march because it is a Vampire and the Dire Wolves get there pretty fast with 12" Vanguard + 9" movement on the first turn) on the flanks where everything else stays near the middle. Remember anything with the Vampire rule can march itself but cannot make any other units march if it's a character in a unit, so Blood Knights and Black Coaches and the like can go wherever they please.

Yea. Thinking of working dogs and a varghulf into my larger lists. Blood knights are cool but leadership 7 with frenzy is ouch, vamps are ld 7 also so i cant use a chx to boost it up much.

Run a unit of 5 dogs deployed directly in front of them, they will have no legal charge until you move the dogs and boom, no more having to roll for frenzy.

Lately I've been putting a tricked out Vamp lord in a unit of Black Knights or Blood Knights, and it has been so much fun.

It's definitely an all-eggs-in-one-basket approach, but it works very well as a flanking hammer. It's best when paired with a Terrorgeist or two, which makes for a very heavy flank with pretty good target saturation.

think i may just use cairn wraiths, i have a lot of lil characters in my army for magiks. If im reading it correctly danse macabre no longer allows you to charge? is that right? ::sadface::

Correct, danse macabre only allows for an up to 8" NORMAL move. No more charges.

Do I look like a guy with a plan?
