I'm trying to get a good picture in my head of what this could have been like. Samurai's with chain-katana's and bolters instead of bows? Or more like knights in shining armor, like knights of the round table status. What kind of enemies were they fighting, I've read of demons and such but where they just your regular chaos demons or what? If the lion is locked away in the fortress how does only the emperor know about it? Its not like his friggen body teleported there. I speculate that maybe the lion is in the warp with the emperor fighting chaos while his body is locked away in life support in there fortress monastary. Similiar to the emperor. And kind of like the movie "the matrix" please discuss cause I think this is pretty cool

A. Dark Angel fluff is quite clear on Caliban, it was ruled by knightly orders that cleared 'deamons' from the world.
B. These deamons were probably mutated animal, think jabbersythe type creatures.
C. It is the Emperor and the Watchers in the Dark who know he is on the Rock.

Thematically they were more like Arthurian knights going on dragon-slaying quests than Samurais.

Lion el'Johnson = King Arthur. He even got the sleeping part right - the King/Primarch who sleeps until Britain/the Imperium needs him once again.
|
I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.
'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.' |

You'll have to wait for Lynata to jump in now, she has the full quote, all fluff is fluff, but no fluff is fluff, yadda yadda yadda
I think we can all agree though that the native Americanesque Dark Angels are a definite retcon.

Nah its always been there, but has nothing to do with Caliban or the lion, remember the Deathwing story is set (tale of two heads talking) long after the heresy and is (i believe) an alegory of the fall of caliban told to new recruits to "warm" them to the idea of ariving home only to find it infested with an insidious force

It's from Deathwing.
The name of the Planet, as far as I know, isn't mentioned, just that they are recruited from there. It's written before the destruction of Caliban was thought about, so could be there as much as anywhere else.
Oh I see what you are saying now though. It was changed and explained to be a recruiting world.

As mentioned, the pre-imperium was very much like an arthurian style world. Knightly Orders existed all over, usually warring with each other until Lion went on a crusade to unite them, at the same time as wiping out all of the chaos mutated beasts on the planet. The Lion wasn't locked away until after the Heresy, the Emeperors "knowledge" of it is based apon the idea that he is omniscient and can see and no all through his psychic state.

Fairly sure King Arthur didn't go to sleep...
Fairly sure he died instead...

So yes, Caliban was a Planet of Dark woods and lonely Castles, until it had to act as the homeworld of a Legion.
