So I am getting into Warhammer for the first time ever and have after much deliberation decided on Tomb Kings as my first army.

Now this presents some problems that I hope that you Dakka can help me with.

I am a college student and as so, have a somewhat tight budget so I do not want to purchase models that will either suck or I will never use just because they look cool. So I need some advice on what is the best units to use and how to equip them.

Now my second problem following the first is that I have decided on 1500 points to start as I can easily build onto that, and I don't have a flipping clue about what I should put in my army list or the best ways to build one.

So can you help me Dakka because honestly if I am left to my own devices you can expect me to buy the wrong things just cause they are cool.

I did hear that archers are a good choice and was curious what kind of armies can one build using Tomb Kings?

The best way to start TK's is to get their battle box along with the army book and rule book to start.

As far as units that you'll need, you'll need to get some Core (skelletons, horsemen, and chariots - all which can be found in the big battalion box).

Next, you're going to need at least 1 Liche Priest and one Tomb King or Prince. For these, you have choices - you can get the empire wizards box and put tomb king heads on them from the battalion box (you can find a couple of really cool conversions on the interwebs for this). For your King, you can get the big Sphinx Box and make it the elite unit that has the Tomb Guard unit. This will give you a character and special choice all in one.

Get a couple of games in at this point so you can then decide where you want to take the army - more magic (Casket), stompy (Bone Giant), or shooty (catapult). After you get a good core and special units you need to see where your play style is and go from there. For the most part, you'll have a good shell for an army and will be able to field a solid army.

Here is a good blog and it shows how he made some unit fillers so you don't have to have so many models. All it takes is some Hirst molds. I like his conversions on how he made his liche priests as well.

I think that it really depends on how you want your army to play on the table as this will affect how you build your core and as a result the purchases, so are you after fast combat (chariots) ranged counter attack (archers), Grindcore (warriors) or balanced (mixed approach)?

The Battalion box is a great place to start and I would highly recommend purchasing as so far I have used every model in that set and not once (well a few times but that was bad deployment) regretted it. BUT have a plan before building them, its so depressing to build 40 archers only to wish you'd have warriors or vice versa

learn to convert stuff.

i've never needed to buy a character model ever, because you can always convert one.
Shop on Ebay

Chariots and skellies are a must for most armies. A Prince/King and a LichePriest characters are all you'll need, which you can convert.
Casket of Souls is handy
Sphinx models are useful
everything else is up to you. I like the Snake riders personally.
