Hey everyone! I'm trying to get into warhammer 40k because I think it seems cool and even though none of my friends play, it seems like a fun way to pass the time and could be a good outlet for some artistic expression! In any case, I've read the rulebook cover to cover and can't wait to get started! Couple problems though.

1. I don't really know which army to pick. I love the way that Tyranids look and after reading up on some of their background, they seem pretty sick. I also love the Hive Fleet Leviathan color scheme. Is this a good army to start with? I only get one chance because as you will see in #2...

2. I don't have very much money. I'm a student right now so most of my money goes toward food and booze. I'm also not a business major so I probably won't make a lot in the future. Because of this dearth of cash, I only get one shot to get it right. If I try out an army and realize I don't like it, then I'm seriously up a creak...

Ok well if you people on the forums would be willing to help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are a few things I'm looking for in an army. I want the army to be flexible (CC or shooting depending on how I'm feeling), I want the army to have some kick-ass heroes (one of the reasons I was initially attracted to Tyranids is because the Hive Tyrant and Swarmlord look so dope), and I want some quality fluff (I'm probably not going to be playing in any tournaments any time soon so I want the army to be less about winning and more about have an awesome back story).

I think that's about it! Let me know what kind of armies might fight that criteria and let me know! Thanks in advance!

if you like the look of the tyranids then buy the tyranid battleforce for 90 dollars! its the best place to start 8-11 different paints and 2 brushes along with some spray paint for undercoat and static grass and sand your looking at about 150-160 dollars i think.

from there on you can add little bits when you find some spare cash.

the tyranids are a completly viable race to choose to play competitivley and they are awsomeley fun to play also

Hi welcome to Dakka!

1. Sure, if you like the look of an army, go for it. Tyranids aren't a bad army for a beginner at all.

2. Try eBay, you can get stuff relatively cheap there. You can start small, maybe a few gaunts to start painting with and then slowly grow from there.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your help. Whenever someone is starting a new army grey knights are always suggested but there are way too many SM players out there and GK just seem so dull... I'm really glad you think that Tyranids will be a good starting army! I'll be sure to look at eBay and see if I can get some stuff on the cheap!

On another note, and I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this, but does anyone know of a link to a site that could help me learn how to paint Hive Fleet Leviathan? Thanks for being patient!

No idea I'm afraid. I think that there were some tutorials on the GW website but I'm not sure if they're still there. My best guess would be to check out the painting and modelling sub forum or look for an article on the subject here on Dakka. If not, I'm sure that using a search engine will get you somewhere.

Asking in the Modeling and Painting Section is a good idea.

I think that the "How to Paint" book has Hive Fleet Leviathan in there, but I am not 100% certain.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
