Hey i wanna start 40k but i have a problem with selecting an army.... could anyone help? I love the grey knights, space marines and tau... But i face so many feelings of dissatisfaction when i read their codecs many because the
-space marines dont have a "late game" unit (sorry for the lack of a better term) like the deamon princes and carnifex or ork garant (is that how its spelt?)
-the tau dont have any good defence against melee and swarm armies (or any that i can conceive)
-the grey knights... nothing really wrong with them other than the lack of color schemes to differentiate from other players... (ok that was really childish but im being honest here)
My particular play style is usually to shoot up the opponent to a nice size before steam rolling them... probably yall would advise IG but ive kinda been warm that IG would leave a big gapping hole in my wallet which would still be there without IG as it would have gone to my tummy... im probably confused but please help me good samaritans!!!!

Ok, let's get to it:

Space Marines: Can't say i know them too well, Termies will stick around for a while if you treat them right, TH/SS units will beat face one to one against almost any given opponent. If you want MCs though, SM are not the choice for you.

Tau: Interesting given the updates in 6th, I don't know how they perform now. Big screening units of Kroot are the standard method of CC prevention, but JSJ with a large battlesuit army is also hard to engage in CC.

Grey Knights: Really? Paint them red, or blue, or whatever colour you want. Most people will be glad to see "Not grey" knights. They don't have to be silver. As for an army that can whittle down with shooting, then assault the enemy, this is the perfect army for you. It even has the "late game" unit in the form of Dreadknights. Stormravens will also serve you well.

IG: Tanks. Why assault when you can kill them from 100 miles away? Lots of models in certain lists, just remember Ebay, Wayland games and other discount stores are your friends

Pretre: OOOOHHHHH snap. That's like driving away from hitting a pedestrian.
Pacific:First person to Photoshop a GW store into the streets of Kabul wins the thread.
Selym: "Be true to thyself, play Chaos" - Jesus, Daemon Prince of Cegorach.

Welcome to dakka.

Have you thought about the Necron? They have a really pretty dominating gun line in this edition, and some really nice close combat stuff as well for when you've knocked down your opponents.

You want Gunline? Go Imperial Guard. Seriously the Manticore is sickeningly good, as is the Basilisk, the Leman Russ, the Demolisher, IG Power blobs (especially with SNAP FIRE rules in 6th suddenly 3 x Flamer equipped squads will not be charged by many other than suicidal units suffering rage like Death Company).

The IG has impressive Flyers with Valks and Vendi's, veteran units and Stormtroopers. Some nice Characters and lots of different styles of play (Mechanised, Armour, Air Assault, Footslogger, Veteran Lists, Assault Lists based around Elites like Ogryns).

I picked up a huge army for £80 (4 Leman Russes, 2 Chimera's, Basilisk, Manticore, and a Boatload of Infantry and characters).

You've just got to hunt around, join a local club, wait for someone who is desperate to shift an army (usually 2-3 players a month) and you can pick up a bargain because they want the cash to buy new toys. As said above, Ebay is most definitely your friend, and don't be afraid to bid on crappy painted tanks and then strip them and repaint them!

If you are trying to choose between GK, SM and Tau, you need to look at your money situation first. If money isn't an issue I honestly think you should run Tau. Sixth edition has done alot for the shooting game, and if Tau do anything well it's shoot. Run a ton of markerlights, Firewarriors and Broadside squads. You won't need a late game unit, you will simply blast everything to death.
Barring that, run space marines. They are the multipurpose army. You can run them pretty much however you want, and they have a late game unit as well, the TH/SS Terminators.
Now for the gamer on a budget GK is definitely the way to go. It's a teensy army with alot of firepower and relatively strong assault. They can take a storm raven which is nice seeing as how sixth edition is leaning toward flyer domination.
I hope at least some of this helped.

Thanks man! i'll definitely consider them and i actually had a shock trooper squad lying around somewhere before i actually got serious!

Hi. Well If you can't pick the best thing to do is buy 2 Assault on black reach and just use allies. There is 2k points. It's not expensive and if you play it right you can win. Also those SM's can be Blood Angels or any other branch really with the right paint job and a few bits.

Also Orks are amazing. The snap fire rules and the cheap cost of Loota Boys (they don't come in the set but are cheap) give them a great ranged unit to supplement a green tide.

One last thing to consider are Necrons. My brother started playing Necrons and they are really cool and fun. 2 Necron Battleset's and you have a majority of your army right there. really just supplement it with HQ's and a Monolith.

Also Y no Boobies....

If you want boobies Eldar or sisters of battle. I have seen some creative things done with Green Stuff. Disturbing but creative. Imagine if you will the Sisters of Bondage. Ya. They exist.

Note Black Templars and Bloods Angels will not team with orks. Even Orks modded to have boobs.
