Firstly apologies to those who have contributed to my Mercs request for info, it seems one of my birthday presents was...

The Cryx starter set!

So, whilst I will also be getting myself some mercs in the future, talk to me about Cryx if you would, I am liking the starter set caster Deneghra(sp) and the heavy warjack seems like it will be fun (perhaps I'll get a second plastic jack to use the additional bits for magnetizing both jacks.

The list of models I like in this range are:

Casters:
Asphyxious
Deneghra
Scavrous
The Witch Coven

Jacks:
Cankerworm
DeathJack
Erebus
Malice
Nightmare
Seether
And I'm not adverse to all the little chicken walkers

I don't like the four legged spindely critters though.

Units:
Bane Knights
Bane Thralls
Cephalyx overlords
Soulhunters
Withershadow combine

Solos:
Iron Lich Overseer
Necrotech and scrap thrall
Warwitch Siren

Can I make something work building on the starter box with that lot?

I'm surprised that Goreshade and Mortenebra aren't on the list of casters you like. They're my two favourites.

When you start out you can play battlebox to battlebox. Obviously you're also looking for the step past that, here's a 25 point list using the models you listed.

Warwitch Deneghra
Slayer
Deathripper
Defiler
10x Bane Thralls
Warwitch Siren
Withershadow Combine

25/25

Plan: Deneghra casts her debuff spells onto enemy models through the arc nodes. The Withershadow combine remove upkeeps and cast puppet strings on your models. Then the rest of your army goes to town on his army.

Goreshade is quite nice, I like his little sidekick. Mortenebra... I love the artwork for but the model's pictures aren't living up to it (again, this may be as we're said before about PPs terrible gallery pics).

Would it be better to keep my slayer magnetized so as to get a second and use them as corrupter/seethers instead? (maybe just seethers, as the corrupter rules on battlecollege seem to point to it being a fairly useless jack).

Also, I'm pondering the idea of a second helljack with the lich lord overseer to keep it running. Perhaps with something to bodyguard him?

I like heavy jacks and it seems to me like that's what warmachine should have more of but I see so many infantry heavy lists on dakka and elsewhere, would 2 heavy jacks be overkill in a one caster list?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
How would this look at 35?

Warwitch Deneghra5
Deathripper4
Defiler5
Seether9
Slayer6
Bane Knights (Leader and 5 Grunts)6
The Withershadow Combine5
Iron Lich Overseer3
Warwitch Siren2

((Plan: Deneghra casts her debuff spells onto enemy models through the arc nodes. The Withershadow combine remove upkeeps and cast puppet strings on your models. And in addition, the Iron Lich Overseer looks after the Seether, which is halfway self sufficient anyway being able to run and charge without cost and generating a point of focus by it's self.

The plastic kit makes a Slayer, Reaper and Corruptor not a Seether. The Overseer/Seether combo looks like a good plan though.

It's got to be worth a few magnets to have a Corruptor on tap just in case you think of a list that needs one.

Ah, my mistake.

I'll keep that Overseer/seether combo then, see how it pans out.

As to the corruptor, battlecollege is describing it as fairly useless and doesn't have a huge amount of positives to say about the reaper either. I'm wondering if I shouldn't take the slayers and convert them to Malice and Erebrus? I doubt those kits allow for magnetizing though.

I wouldn't let battlecollege get you down if you're really interested in a model. There's always a way to make any given model work (or at least that's what I have experienced), but you may have to spend some time figuring out a few tricks to actually get it to work the way you want.
