Oklahoma City, Ok.

I have a quick question.
If I use silicone(tube form) to fill some gaps in my Imperial Bastion, would that cause issues when priming/painting?
One friend tells me it's "rubbery" quaility when dried would cause issues. I've seen it painted over in a household setting,
so I'm not sure how it would be different? And I have the bath and tile kind, but also the drywall kind, if it matters. And
the cracks I'm fillinf are mainly where the different levels meet. Not huge, but obvious. I like the idea of using something
like silicone so i can easliy remove extra amounts.

I've had superglue with baking soda(powder?) suggested as a way to fill it instead of GS. A putty would be more of a hassle
than the liquid state of the silicone.

As a side note, anyone ever look at the completeled Bastion on the box cover? That was some bad crack filling, IMHO!
Way obvious. I was surprised.

I'm not sure if you can paint silicone or not. I would just put some out, and spray paint it with some primer and see if it sticks, that will answer that question.

Otherwise I use the superglue/baking soda method on filling joints on vehicles and SM. Works good, but I don't know how big the gaps are you are trying to fill. You could use GS, but you would probably use a lot of it on a building like you are working on.

I would try the silicone, I think it would work fine, as long as the paint sticks. You could have found another gap filler we can all use for our models.

Let us know how it works out.

Im pretty sure paint wont stick to silicone, but they also have caulks that aren't silicone based, it should say what kind it is on the label

Somewhere in south-central England.

Just use a model filling putty like Mr Surfacer, or Squadron putty.

Silicone is the enemy of paint.

Just use a proper product for the job...greenstuff, modeling putty, gel superglue, etc.

What they said.

Even if you were to use paintable caulk - when it cures it shrinks and you would still have problems.

If you are looking for something that is easier to work with than GS and doesn't have the bonding properties of Squadron (Testors, Tamiya, Gunze) Green (White) Putty - you can hit up a hardware store and pick up some 3M Acryl putty. Red, Green, Blue or White (different drying times and hardnesses IIRC).

It is designed as a glazing compound and for doing spot repairs on automotive body work. The chemical is an acrylic, and you can apply it somewhat thick then wipe down with a wet finger/tool to get a smooth bead just like caulk. It takes paint wonderfully and has minimal shrinkage when drying. Unlike some of the other putties - it is a 1 part compound so no mixing stuff.
