I am looking for WW3/apocalyptic RPGs with a more "realistic" setting (i.e. no mutants, no zombies, not a Fallout 3 rpg, etc.). I own a copy of Twilight 2013 (a modern version of Twilight 2000), and while I like the fluff (even though most hate it), I must admit the crunch isn't that good. So I am and wondering if Dakka would know if there are other good ones out there worth trying. Any suggestions?

Had a copy of that, not impressed. For what it is worth id try and find a copy of the original Twilight 2000. Felt it was a much better system, I played it when it first came out. I know you can find items om Ebay. Knoble Knight Games has a good selection of items. Also FarFuture Enterprises, Marc Millers compamy, makes a softback copy of the original boxed set rules as well as all the adventures that take place in Poland.

Dont think anyone does a modern military RPG at the moment. Cant even think of a game to tweak to get the feel of what you want.

FFG's "Only War" should work fairly well, I think. Fairly easy to "mod" for other settings. Just switch the las- for autoguns and only use other humans as enemies? Some of the more 40k'ish classes should be replaced as well, of course.

That said, there are a number of interesting game systems I could recommend for modding. Green Ronin's AGE used in their Dragon Age RPG also works very nice, and I've been working on a conversion for the Mass Effect setting, just to name one example to show how easily a good rule system can be modified to suit other worlds.

I don't know of any that would apply to what OP is looking for straight out of the box, too, though.

It really depends what you consider realistic... For my money and time you can't beat Paranoia

You are right. Maybe I could modify All Flesh Must be Eaten as its system is rock stupid easy (in a good way). But, with that being said does anyone else have any recommendations?

AFMBE sounds like a good match. Most post-apoc games are Fallout-inspired. You might have a look at Atomic Highway, which is more Mad Max-inspired but it is far from rules heavy.

Was coming in to mention Rifts until I saw the "More realistic" bit.

Also Palladium system makes me want to eat a bullet. But I do love the setting!

Realistic as in no mutants, no hand held nuclear missile launchers (I yes I know they techincally exist, but you guys know what I mean), etc. You are kinda squishy, and must think about you actions. The more I think about it the more I realize that AFMBE system would be perfect for this, and that I could just use the fluff from Twilight 2013 ( Enjoy the fluff, the crunch sucks). Also thanks for the help everyone.

Twilight:2000, both editions have some great moduals that evolve the game that 2013 was lacking in my opinion.

There are several of these that you may enjoy.

Here are the top ten. I'll leave out T2000.

1. Aftermath.

2. Atomic Highway

3. Gamma World
Try to get the original.... But there are other mutations.

4. GURPS- Dig, dig, dig...

There are a few more, but theres ten to start with, most are free, and the rest are ...available.

Drivethrurpg.com is where I get alot of my stuff.

I didn't even scatch the surface, by the way...

The thing is that most of those books have a lot of "unrealistic" elements to them aka mutants. That and most of those books appear to be PDF only, and kinda of lesser know. I should have mentioned this in the OP, but I strongly prefer a physical book. Also i kinda need a rules/game system that is more "mainstream" so that it would be easier for others to find. With that said thank you very much for the help.

These days, the power of the internet compells you...
