Subject: Wanting to start Eldar, help me out with whats on the sprues.

Storm Trooper with Maglight

Like the title says, I finished my IG army and looking to start on my next project. I love the Striking scorpions, Howling banshees and Storm guardians.
This is where the quesiton comes in. The GW website and a look on Google didn't find me pictures of the sprues so I ask the Eldar players of Dakka to help me out.
"Whats on the sprue?"
The odd number of troops in most of the boxes and trying to save money I want to maximize using everything I can like for instance buying 2 boxes of scorpions gives me 12 models where I only need 10. So using the 2 extra to make say Karandras or a scorpion autarch.
I would like storm guardians - can i use a regular box of guardians or dire avengers to make them? (I don't want the metal storm guardians GW has on the website)
I would like striking scorpions - does the box of 6 come with weapon options like the claw? can I make my Karadras and Autarch out of bitz from boxes?
Those are the big questions. I think I might have to wait until the new eldar codex / waves come out to be able to do what I want. I'm not adverse to converting so if you guys know if any DE bitz would make good Storm guardians / Striking scorpions let me know.
Any ideas / comments welcome.

Storm Guardians are the regular plastic Guardians with metal arms/heads.

Ah well metal arms and heads are not too bad, so I can at least pose them. Do they have any extra bitz or will I have to live with having 2 of my eldar without helmets? Whats in the GW picture is all I get?

As far as Scorpions. With two boxes would get 10 standard scorpions 1 autarch with biting blade and 1 autarch with claw. You are missing the option for the two sabres. You could call the one Karandras if you'd like but is a little underwhelming compared to other HQ units.

I'll admit it does look pretty weedy compaired to most HQs but I think the Karandras model looks just so bad I will not pay money for it.
Excellent, I'll feel better buying the scorpions knowing I'll be able to use the extra for the Karandras and / or Autarch
The missing chain sabres kinda sucks as that was a strong maybe for an exarch.
If I remember what the biting blade looks like correctly (2 handed chain sword) I might be able to cut the 2 biting blades i'll have from the boxes and make a Darth Maul double chain sword and call that the chain sabres hmm

The Karandras model isn't too bad without the godawful huge head. I did mine with a regular head on the body and it's pretty cool IMHO.

It sounds like you like the Eldar CC models too. But you'll probably collect lots, then never want to use them after a game or 2.
With the changes to trasports in 6th, units cannot assault from Wave Serpents any more. You've got to run them down the table, or leave them outside the transport for a full turn before getting to charge them in. Scorpions might survive, and getting Fortune cast on them will help.
Look into getting Harlequins if you want a CC force, as they can run ahead and give good cover options.
As for the sprues question, does anyone know where the plastic sprues come from with Storm Guardian weapons? I got a couple in an ebay bid, but I wanted to get more. If they're all metal now, that's counter to what I thought. Aren't they all plastic now, and the metals being from old packs?
Chapterhouse sells the Scorpion exarch kit, with all options included:
http://chapterhousestudios.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=118&product_id=194
I got it, but haven't used it yet.

Keep in mind these things:
* Storm Guardian box do not contain enough models for a squad, you need two.
* There is roughly enough parts to make two, maybe three, Storm Guardians from a Dire Avenger kit, though they will have plumes.
* While many Eldar kit contains a plethoria of grenades, very few can actually take them. Why? In 3rd edition they could!
* Farseers are great, awesome, beings, but you need a squad to hide them in. This is the big problem for eldar - weak squads to hide Farseers in. Warlocks and Wraiths are good for this, but very expensive.
* I like the Avatar of Khaela Mensha Khaine. So should you. He's very cuddly. The GW model is very high quality but on the small side. Forgeworld model is significantly larger and extremely nice. Avatar goes well with anything that's on foot in an Eldar force. Fearless is your friend.
* You really do need long range weapons. There's still Necron Canoes and Tyranid monsters that you do not want close.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums. |

Thanks for the replies guys these are really helping me out and putting me at ease. After spending so much on IG and saving up for a wedding/honeymoon I can't just "Buy and See" haha
@SlaveToDorkness
Yes Krandas' head is what I have a problem with! I'll remember to take a look at the karandras and see if switching his head would be worth it next time I get to the GW store.
@Skinnereal
Yeah the not assualting out of a transport even if it didn't move sucks. But with only 6 models coming out it shouldn't be too hard to hide them behind a supped up transport for a turn.....hopefully. Yeah full plastic storm guardians would be ideal as metal and I do not have a good history. (Putting together a metal hive tyrant before I knew about pinning or magnets lol)
@Mahtamori
I see that just running my squads up the field would be a sure fire way to get blasted apart but with the transport capacity of only 6 there really woudn't be enough for anything but fire dragons and maybe banshees.
You're right about the long range. That is a major weakness in my possible army. I was thinking 2 wraithlords (converted to look like scorpions :p) with a brightlance and / or a squadron of warwalkers with bright lances / scatter lasers something like that.
Edit: ah looking at the Wave serpent it has a transport capacity of 12 not 6. The grav falcon has a capacity of 6. :p silly me.
