Hi Dakka-people
Been trying to build a IG list for 6th ed, and this is what I've been heading towards lately at 1750:

IG Primary Detachment:

HQ
CCS - 3xMelta, Astropath, Chimera (ML,HF) 165 pts

TROOPS
Platoon 490 pts
PCS - 3xMelta, Chimera (ML,HF)
5x Infantry Squad - Plasmagun, Power Axe

Platoon 200 pts
PCS - 3xFlamer, Chimera (ML,HF)
2x Infantry Squad

FAST
Vendetta 130pts
Vendetta 130pts
Vendetta 130pts

HEAVY
Manticore - HF 160 pts

SW ALLIES DETACHMENT:
HQ
Njal - Terminator Armor 270 pts

TROOPS
5 Grey Hunters - Flamer 75pts

TOTAL 1750 pts

During 5th ed. I mostly played leafblower, but with the new ruleset, I'm more drawn towards a more foot-based list.

Njal will join the 50 man blob and take two powers from Divination. Pretty much every power except nr. 4 (Ignores Cover) and 6 (reserves bonus, I've got the Astropath for that) is good, with nr. 2 (foreboding) giving 50 Guardsmen a 4++. Even nr. 5 (precognition) will be good, as it will allow me to put Njal in front with re-rollable 2+,4++. Pre-sience with FRFSF on the blob will be good at killing infantry. Njal's special powers will be a boon late-game, as they even work against fliers. His 24" almost-no-psychic-powers-allowed is pretty beast as well...
Question: Is it worth paying 270pts for Njal, or is a regular Rune Priest with Master of the Runes + Terminator armor a better choice?

I have considered a few other options that might boost the blob, such as Yarrick or Khan (SM codex). Any thoughts on that?

Otherwise the list is pretty straight forward. The two naked Inf. Squads jump in Vendettas in objective games, and screen the big blob in others (5+ cover). 5 Grey Hunters are Obj. Campers. The three Chimera squads are there for some mobility. Manticore is good vs. Vehicles, nasty Nob Biker Deathstars and for sniping

Do you think pimping up the second platoon to create another big blob would be good?

Comments and Improvements?

Thanks!

Two rune priests would be better than Njal, he just isn''t hard enough. I would like to check the new powers available to him before setting this opinion in stone.

Jacobus(SoB) gives FNP[plus other goodness like +1A!], this is what you want from the blob.
Khan would give furious charge which is available in your codex already.
Though I would recommend a wolf priest, it gives you fearless, outflank, acute senses, stealth. Which is pretty good.
Azreal from DA could be fun with his 4++ save and fearless to the 50 guys.

Space wolves can bring 2 HQs, bring two. I would go fro rune priest, as he has the best defence and wolf priest for your blob.

I would maybe go for a TLlascannon or TL assault cannon razorback for your grey hunters, it will be good to have some transport, then it gives a fairly reasonable antiflyer unit.

Thanks for the reply

Yeah, I've been thinking about Uriah and Azrael as well, however they do not bring psychic defense, which probably will be key in this edition. They do however have something going for them, as they, unlike the Rune Priest, still work well if there is psychic defense (Runes of Warding) around.

But I will try out both the 2xRP and RP+Wolf Priest combos. They only downside to the Wolf Priest is that the blob becomes Fearless - otherwise, going to ground in a piece of area terrain would give it a 2+ cover save, and they would still be able to shoot the following turn due to Get Back In The Fight.

But if I do go for Uriah, would you recommend taking a bog-standard Sisters Squad and perhaps a squad of DCA+Crusaders?

Since you can take more than one HQ and you want a meat shield, why not take a naked Rune Priest and cheap Wolf Guard Battle Leader? Throw him in either TDA or Runic Armor and give him a Storm Shield. Now you have a 2+/3++ and are still spending less points.

I think you are selling yourself short though on the Allied Detachment. You could make a very small Drop Pod force (two Grey Hunter packs and a Dreadnought with one of these coming in on a 2+ on turn 2 or 3 and the rest on turn 1) to have some forward projection or even take a Long Fang pack for some cheap firepower. I think there are a lot of possibilities you aren't considering as you just want the HQ choice(s).

BTW here's the point breakdown for going with the RP/WGBL:

WGBL @ 135 points w/- Runic Armor, Storm Shield, Mark of the Wulfen
RP @ 105 points w/ Wolf Tail Talisman

An extra 30 points can go a long way but more importantly your meat shield isn't also your psychic defense. Also, you can take another Wolf Tail Talisman on the WGBL. The nice thing is this is a layered defense. You have your Rune Priest 4+, the Wolf Tail Talisman 5+, and then the normal 6+ for your entire squad. The WGBL also gets another 5+ from the Runic Armor. These do stack so you have multiple chances to nullify a power.

Thanks cowmonaut, good thinking! Though I'm not sure how long that 2+ save will last, I mean we all know how easily two Terminators die to a torrent of fire, I guess I'll have to try it out and see if the points pay off, or if a second Rune Priest would be better, as he does give me more options on the psychic table, and more "offensive" psychic def... However, I would also give the Battle Leader Saga of the Hunter, going to ground in area terrain for 2+ cover FTW

I think that the points are a bit too tight for some Drop-Pods, as I would have to add a Wolf Guard unit well to get a reliable amount of Melta-shots on the drop. I would have to drop some of the Vendettas/Manticore, which I am reluctant to do, as I believe they are key in this Edition (Flyer+Deathstar defence)

However, I do believe that I am lacking some AT in turn 1, before the Vendettas arrive, so a Long Fang squad would definitely be a good addition... not sure if they will fit points-wise but I'll try
