Wondering Why the Emperor Left

For me its toss up between the Iron Warriors and Word Bearers. Theirs something to be said for blowing your enemies to pieces with long range guns before sending in the ground ponders, but the Word Bearers do have the advantage of having Chaos demons on their side. Both seem to have the right idea about using cultist and mortal followers, I always thought that part of the reason Legions like the Night Lords have so many problems is their pre heresy snobbery prevents them from fighting alongside mortals. The Iron Warriors and Word Bearers also seem to be the only ones that actually profited from the Heresy and actually know more powerfull than ever rather than being shattered or turned into plauge zombies. I have to go with Word Bearers, theirs just something about havinig the Gods on you side. I don't think the Black Legion counts, the only reason anyone pays attention to them or the "Despoiler" is because Horus came from that Legion, in all likelyhood Erebus, Honsou, Kor Pharon, and Huron Blackheart have far better qualifications for the Warmaster title.

And yes I know their aren't two p's in emperor, its just a typo

Black Legion is pretty much confirmed strongest and you'd be hard-pressed to explain why they aren't. I believe there's an excerpt in fluff that the Black Legion can field 10 times as many CSM as the 2nd largest traitor legion, the Word Bearers. The key to their success comes from cloning and absorbing other Warbands, whereas many other Legion remnants are too prideful to allow such a "tainting".

After that, I'd say the Word Bearers. Large numbers, an organized command structure and Legion-wide unity (the Dark Council dictating the acts of the Dark Apostle Warhosts throughout the Galaxy), and 2 Worlds as bases in different parts of the Galaxy. #3 is probably the Iron Warriors, who seem to stop any kind of coordination at the Grand Company level. I'm not sure wtf Perturabo is doing. After these top 3 + Alpha Legion there's really no more coherent structure anymore though, and you just have disparate warbands as opposed to a Legion.

Weakest probably goes to Emperor's Children and Thousand Sons. They've lost all semblance of unity and even of their mission.

Overall probably Black Legion >>>> Word Bearers > Iron Warriors > Alpha Legion > Death Guard > World Eaters > Night Lords > Emperor's Children > Thousand Sons

Red Corsairs are probably up there too as they behave more similar to the Black Legion. Pragmatic behavior regarding God-worship for its members, a strong central overlord, encourage cooperation with other anti-rebel groups, absorbs other warbands assets, and so on.

You appear to have forgotten that 88% of all humans, 41% of Eldar, 27% of all Tau, 18% of all orks, 9% of all Necrons, and 6% of all Tyranids are actually Alpha Legionnaires in disguise.

Ive heard that Black legion can field 10 times as much marines as the second legion in size, so they would be the most powerful imo.

I am just playing devils advocate here, because i actually agree with you, but the Black Templars can field many more marines than anyone else(excluding maybe SW) and i wouldnt consider them the strongest loyal chapter

Black Legion is probably the biggest and most unified, though I think they're rather boring...

I'll have to vote for the Alpha Legion, just because there's so little really known about them.
