Hi,
I have recently started WH40k with a friend and we decided to go halves on the "Assault on Black Reach" set and I got the Marines. I then went looking around the internet for a chapter to use, and I came across the Space Wolves which I immediately fell in love with because of their Nordic style and the way they are just more awesome than normal space marine chapters. This leads on to my question:
Will I be able to start a Space Wolves army with the marines I already have (bearing in mind they have only been primed)?
Please also keep in mind that I am currently just learning the game so an effective army isn't that important.
Any input would be much appreciated.

I know a guy who has half AOBR marines and half SW marines for his Space Wolves. It looks fine. I think he added a wolf tail here and there to the AOBR guys.

You need ten regular marines for your minimum troop choices of two squads of five Greyhunters. You get ten normal marines, but problem is that one of them has a missile launcher that, IIRC, the Greyhunters cannot have. That and the marines do not look wolfy at all.

I recommend also getting one box of regular wolves: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440281a&prodId=prod260003a

This will allow you to have full sized greyhunter squads, and it has a lot of extra bits to convert your missile launcher dude to have some other weapon as well as generally wolf up you Black Reach marines.

Uh, Space Wolves run lots of missile launchers, getting a missile guy is a good thing. Throwing some AOBR guys into your army is going to save you a nice amount of time and money.

Also, maybe not everyone likes the 'wolfy' look of helmet-less hairy guys with wolf pelts and wolf tassles and wolf capes.

Yes, but if he wants to have a legal army merely out of those models, then the ML is a problem. He needa at minimum of two squads of Greyhunters with at least five guys in each. Greyhunters cannot have missile launchers.

Ok, but 3 AOBR tac marine sets can be had for cheap (much cheaper than 2 SW boxes). That's 3 missile launchers (hard to get and expensive otherwise), and hey you can use those sargeant guys for the long fang squad leader...

Well, there really is no need to convert the missile dude into anything if he gets any more models, as the minimum size of the Greyhunter squads is five.

But one greyhunter box gives a lot of options AoBR marines lack. There is just one lousy flamer in the AoBR set. Space Wolf Box has enough power weapons and plasma guns to equip the squads properly. And the he can make packleaders and lonewolves out of them.

AoBR + Space wolves squad box=

Wolf Lord
Pack of 10 Greyhunters + Packleader
Pack of 6 Greyhunters + Packleader
Lone Wolf
5 Wolf Guard Terminators
Dreadnought

one missile dude left over for later use

And that is with the squads and characters actually having reasonable arment, instead of mere bolters.

On moon miranda.

Space Marines are Space Marines...however you paint them up shouldn't matter. Paint them grey with red and yellow markings and nobody will even know the difference, because really, there isn't any

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

One box of Space Wolves should provide you with all the additional stuff you need to get up and running. Additionally, it has plenty of flair that you can use to make the plain-vanilla marines from AOBR look nice and wolfy. I'd start with clipping off the heads and replacing them with some of the fifty (!) that come in the SW box.

I ran into the exact same problem for my Blood Angels army. None of the AOBR marines provided looked like Blood Angels even when painted.
So I converted them so I could put anything I wanted on it. So I did this: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/429607.page

Like some of the others have said, just buy a Space Wolves pack, use the remaining bits and chuck em onto the AOBR marines.

Good luck!
