Hey guys so I was wondering if anyone had magnetised any necron models mainly the different weapon options for the immortals and the tomb blades ? Any pictures and advice will be welcome
Thanks

It probably wouldnt be that hard to do, just need really small magnets, i will probably do this when i buy some actual immortals, right now i just have a squad of 10 i converted

Hm, well I have an unopened box of Immortals and a whole variety of magnets, including very little ones. I could give it a try.
The reason I have not done this before is because the Immoratals weapons are very picky, especialy the wires that come from their back to the weapon.
In order to magnetize the guass/tesla options you will need to magnetize three different parts:
1. their left wrist to the hand on the gun.
2. their right shoulder to their right arm.
3. the wires from their spine to the gun.

Another problem is that each torso with wires coming out the back match only one of the guns with wires coming out. So when you change weapon options you will have to figure out which is which every time. I saw it as to much of a hassle when I assembled my first two boxes. Do you want me to give it another try though?

I'd suggest either dealing with one option, or if your oponent is fine with you telling them what they are despite what they have. (a lot of people just see alien robot weapon and don't know better). or buying a couple extra boxes of them so you can have both.

as far as tomb blades go, I can't help there, I've never seen the models outside of the box pictures, but they look a whole lot easier to magnetize.

That's what I was worried about with the wire/torso issue if you wanted to give it a try that would be very helpfull as iv never used magnets before so I'm not to sure on where to start

As someone who magnetizes extensively, and who possesses at least some of the models being discussed, I think I have to say this isn't really going to work well. You're going to need 1/16th" magnets to do it and they simply do not produce enough force to reliably hold the weapons in place. I've concluded that unless you can fit a 1/8th" magnet, you can't magnetize it.

The direction you should be looking at here would be forgetting about putting join points at the wrists and spine - that's never going to work - instead, I'd suggest cutting the guns as attached with a jeweler's saw and magnetizing the inserts, as shown. I think this would world - you may have to glue a small styrene plate to the "rod ends" of the gauss cannon to give you some surface area to add a magnet into. Otherwise, you could do the same but use pins instead of magnets. They female ends of the pins will eventually loosen but you could always patch them with a tiny dab of greenstuff and redrill them to refresh them.

Apologies for the crudity of the attached image, I'm at work and must use MSpaint.

Hmm that does seem like a good idea rather than trying to magnetise the whole thing but will pins hold it together wouldn't the end of the gun just fall off during play from moving the models around unless the pins were tight ?

Nah, they should be pretty snug so long as they are reasonably long. But, you know, try it and see, and if it doesn't work, use magnets instead: those spots either have enough room for a 1/8th" magnet or can be made to accommodate one.

Very good point Ouze.

I'm going to try to crack open my box of immortals tonight.

I'll try one with small magnets on the joints (I don't think this will work, but I'm gonna try anyways)
I'll try one in your method (chopping the gun in half and magnetizing the barrel)
and I think I might try another, cutting in a different spot on the gun.

I'll get back to ya'll on the results.

OK, Ouze, you had the right idea, but the barrels just dont match up there. and the powercell things don't really mix very well. For the guass you got all those wires, and for the tesla you got that one power cell that sticks down at an angle. These help identify the gun, they looked odd when they were switched.

However, with some trial and error, I found a better place to cut and magnetize the gun!
basically the cut is right after the grip for the right hand. Magnets required for one Immortal is 3 3/32X1/16 and 3 1/16X1/32.
magnets at the cut after the right hand grip. and the small magnets to replace the left wrist.

I finished one so far, but didn't any pics, but I've got three more immortals to do, so I'll take pics as I do them.
expect them up Saturday. (busy tonight, and Friday is my gaming night, sorry for the delay)

I look forward to the pics since I have lots of extras and will probably make more at some point.

Good times.

I've written the tutorial with pics.
I put it up on my blog here:
