Hey mates, at the moment I am working on getting my 2000 point list set up for a number of tournaments coming up in the next few months and at the moment I am planning on running 2x squadrons of 3x Scout Sentinels w/Lascannons as my fast attack choices, when a buddy of mine mentioned why dont I try Devil Dogs? From looking at them, they seem like a good investment as not only do they get a 24 inch Melta Blast Template, they can be equipped with a hull-mounted Multi-Melta, making them a very good anti-tank vehicle. Even though the look great on paper, I never see any IG players running them and to be frank, I havent seen many run any of the Hellhound varients at all, which is surprising to say the least. Anyways, just asking a quick question if Devil Dogs are worth taking, and if not, should I just stay with Sentinels or just use the points to invest into more Leman Russ tanks. Appreciate the help mates .

Devil Dogs can be effective however in my experience they are often overshadowed by other choices and for legitimate reasons. Not saying that the devil dog is not effective but there are just better choices out there, dont get me wrong a hull mounted multi-melta with a devil dog is nasty but at the same time a target.

In terms of points the Devil Dog though good cannot compare to a vendetta gunship flyer in terms of tank hunting. Also the Sentinels have a distinct advantage of getting more hull points and being able to outflank. Opponents with mech/armor especially will see it and shoot it dead, especially because it is pricy to take several (all adds up). These are just a few reasons and hope these help.

19th Krieg Siege Army 7500pts.
40k/HH Night Lords 5000pts.
Orks Waaaghmacht Spearhead 2500pts.

I think its gotten better now that any part of the blast marker = full strength. Always hitting with at least S8 AP1 is pretty nice, getting the melta bonus is even nicer.

Meh, they're about the same. They're harder to stun, but they're easier to destroy. They gained the new center-of-blast, but they lost with the new "fast" rules for vehicles.

In the end, it's still an expensive way to field anti-tank, especially in a world where taking down light tanks is easier.

I still dont like that if you want your melta range, there might be a chance of it blowing itself up with a poor scatter

What makes you say that they lost with the new fast vehicle rules? They're still able to move 12" and fire both meltas @ BS3.

Oh, I think I misread here.

Devil dogs still aren't great, though.

The devil dog is Rommel approved Everyone knows the Vendetta is better, (points wise) but where is air support when you need it! Your list has a lot of chimera hulls in it, it would make sence to sneak a devil dog in.

The vendetta is better vs most targets. But it is also more expensive (heavy bolters & astropath optional extras). Plus you only need so many!

Being able to shoot before it dies is great.. as compared to a very likely hit-stun-nothing-dead > now we will see (with all vehicles) hit-hullpoint-shoot-etc....

Its also a great distraction unit. And I think has done well out of the 6ed vehicle rules.

My best luck with the Devil Dog has always been at hunting Termies and MANZ. Or monstrous creatures. It can also draw a decent amount of mid-armour hunting so your sentinels can get in position.

Try not to look at units in a vacuum, and look more at how it will fit in with everything else in your army.

Also, keep this in mind. Your opponent might be shooting at your melta tank. He also might be shooting your LRBT or your sentinels. If you take the Vendetta, and he has ANY AAA, it will be shooting at your Vendetta.

Food for thinking.

Good point, and it seems that many people are worried about flyers and adding in aegis systems or equivalents to their armies just to handle them.

As far as the devil dogs, I'm going back and forth on whether its worth it to get the multi-melta. Sure its another shot, but its only a BS3. The main cannon is a blast weapon so I feel like I have a better chance of it doing something.

Umm, I think I'd actually go with the hull melta now, were I to run devil dogs. Devil dogs are now less likely to survive into late game, but they're much less likely to spend the early part of the game shaken or stunned. This would skew me in favor of more up-front killing power, which the hull melta provides.
