Hey there gents, I have a friend starting an Ork army. Can anyone give me a few pointers on what lists are strong and what their core models are? I'm looking to get him some models for a birthday. Any help is greatly appreciated!

It's kind of unknown too much with 6th just starting. There's a long thread about what we know about orks somewhere else on the forum, in the tactics section, it shouldn't be too hard to find.

That said, getting someone some models, you cannot go wrong with ork boyz, because it really is a horde army and he'll need lots. Nob bikers are also good, lootas provide long range firepower, and battlewagons and the new flyer kits are solid choices and cool models to boot.

ORK BOYZ and tons of them
that is alway a good base to any ork army
there are options like the new flyers(dakka jets are my favorite) if you mix that with a weirdboy (ork physic) thats a nasty combination
looted wagons are great to but theres no kit=( but a great way to make they is with like leman russ and an ork trukk kit bashed or even used the dooms day ark main gun from necrons

I think the only unit that fits all lists are lootas.
