I'm thinking about buying a larger set of paint from the vallejo paint line, but I'm not sure which range to buy. The model color comes in a wider range of colors than the game color but the game color is designed for wargaming. Which would be good for a begining painter?

I too would like an answer on this.
Though since VGC seems designed for wargaming, that's probably the easiest way to go, since my understanding is that a lot more of the colours are comparable to other, similar paint ranges used for wargaming (i.e., GW, PP).

I'm not aware of any difference in the qualities of the paint itself, so it depends on your palette.

It's a simplification, but do you want colours that stand out or blend in? If you're painting camouflage, I'd suggest Model Colour. If you're painting Space Marines, I'd suggest Game Colour.

Choose both. Pick the colors you want on both ranges, then go from there. Really, there's no harm in using both ranges. If you want to buy a huge set first, count how many colors you want on that set and compare it to the other. For example, you feel that the game color set has more colors you need, so buy that. Afterwards, buy the colors you think you will need on the other set (in our example, that will be the model color).

I too like a mix of both, but I am favoring the Model Color more these days. If you want to match the colors from the older GW paint set - by all means go with Game Color, but if not, you are free to pick and choose from 2 great ranges of paint.

Further, if we are talking metallics ...I firmly believe Vallejo Model Color is the very best, check out my blog article on Golds: http://atticwars40k.blogspot.com/2011/10/great-gold-rush-quest-for-best-gold.html
