Did anyone really like this? I didn't... What was with the tense form? Every other book in the series is past tense, yet this one's present tense.

Almost all books in the series have been present tense IIRC.
I thought it was a good book. Not spectacular, but very good. The tension and pace Abnett created as events unfolded was brilliant and the Word Bearers were great, malicious villain's, rather than moustache-twirling schemers. I liked being largely unable to predict what was going to happen or who was going to survive.
It should really have been a much longer, in-depth novel IMHO, but otherwise I thought it was really good.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

It's a little sketchy in terms of its strength as a narrative, some characters disappear and reappear from the story, its pacing comes to a screeching halt every time it switches to Oll, and the tense is a little awkward until you get used to it, but it's a decent read I guess (though technically I listened to it).
I didn't really like some of the retcons it made to the Battle of Calth, and I thought it was amusing that it pretends that Battle for the Abyss never happened.

I enjoyed it a lot, but I found the lengthy descriptions of things exploding that dominated the first chunk of the book bored me.

I loved the book because I thought it was well paced and very informative about the events that unfolded on Calth. And I disagree about the parts of the book with Oll I personally found them to be very insightful as to where the story was headed. And it never denied that Battle for the Abyss happened it may simply be the case that the Ultramarines were unaware of the events unfolding in that book at the time.

I liked it. But it could have at least given a nod to Abyss somewhere. I also would have enjoyed a tighter focus on fewer characters. Oddly enough, I felt like it could have used about 50 more pages.
Is it just me, or are all the Primarchs just a little too emotional? So far ADB's RG is my favorite.

Maybe the tense description was wrong, but it seemed a little odd. To give examples:
Flight Of The Eisenstein wrote:Grulgor nodded, a smile of amusement on his lips.
Know No Fear wrote:Ventanus can't stop him. Sullus moves like a blur.
It didn't quite sit right with me, but if others liked it, I guess it's just me.

I liked it. Not the best in a series by a long shot but a solid read. Best portrayal of Guiliman to date and ADB's speculation of why he wasn't made warmaster makes perfect, elegant sense to me:
