I know these are relatively new, but has anyone started selling an alternative to them yet ?

I scratch built an Ork Flyer and went to the GW site to buy bases and nearly pooped myself when I saw the price of $10 for 1.

At the very least can someone share the height, width, and length dimension ?

Thanks,
Adam

That sure is pretty, but it not only costs more that the GW base I didn't want to sepnd that much on it's also not very Orky at all.

How about using a GW large ovel base and building something a little more orky? The large ovel base is what the flying base is at the bottem, you just need to build something up to the right hight.

I've seen big oval scenic bases of the same dimensions from multiple companies. Check all the usual base companies. Then you just need a rod/stand of the right height, which is easy enough with a dowel or something.

Dragon forge has a few different designs. Just use the plastic stem from the normal base and attach to the oval base. It works out the same but they are a little heavier making it a little more sturdy. I think they are about 8 or 10 bucks.

Dragon Forge and Secret Weapon, and perhaps Fenris games if you want consistent, quality sculpts and great casting. I have a few Secret Weapon flyer bases, one of which was used on my StormRaven -

But you still need the plastic base or some wire to mount it on.

If you have a local hobby store, they will have some clear plastic rods of different diameter, and type. Use them to make your own flyer sticks. Bases can be cast from your own rsin, sold at the same store, or use clear plastic ovals, also sold at the store.

Art, and Art suppy stores. "Hobby town, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. are what I'm referring to, but they also have high end stores that have more or less the same stuff for more price.

Think the resin kit was around 20 bucks, the rods themselves for about 1- 3 bucks, and the glue gun/ epoxy/ glue is from 1-5 bucks.

Make the mold, pour in the release agent, cast the resin, let it dry, glue in the rod, and either drill a hole, and put in a slightly larger tube, so the rod fits in the model, or you can put a cross member on the top, so the model sits in a carrage/ stand.

the flyers don't have to be that high, either, and you can also make ajustable telescoping ones. I've also seen magnetic strips that you could easily mount in or on the model, and metla strips, to magnatize the tops of the base.

Just an idea, but you might like the results...

Thank you all for your responces. It's always nice to see the dakka community chime in and try to find a solution to a problem.

I'm familair with scratch building, mold making, and casting, but was really curious if there was an alternative out there for base and stand for under $10.

Does anyone have a base, ruler, and couple minutes of kill to get the dimensions and share them here ?

Most notabely I need the height of the support arm/pole. I'm guessing the base is 90mm x 120mm since that is the size of most of the one mentioned here.

I'm thinking of using a CD case as a doner for thick, rigid, clear plastic for the flight stem.

The Base is the Large Oval base size mentioned. about 90mm by 120mm

The flight stem is about 130mm (5 inches) tall.

With the measurements I should be able to bash something out, that looks about right.
