Does a weapon have to have Barrage in it's description to be a barrage weapon? I ask because my friend insists his leman russ battle cannons are, even though it's not in their description(he claims it's in some FAQ or other), so maybe I'm missing out on something...

Yes, it has to be described as a barrage weapon.

Secondly, if he's claiming it's in a FAQ it's his responsibility to provide the rules.

All Barrage weapons have the Barrage special rule listed. Note that some older codex have weapons that have a range of G# (i.e. G24") Those are also Barrage. Leman Russ's have no Barrage weapons in the normal IG codex. Ask your friend to show you where it says they are Barrage weapons.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The 'Barrage' in the weapon description is what makes a weapon a Barrage weapon.
The Leman Russ carries no Barrage weapons (nor do any of it's variants). Defiantly nothing in the FAQ to chage this (found here)
Is it possible your friend is confusing Barrage with Ordnance?

Personally I think he was getting it confused, but nothing I said would convince him otherwise.

Part of his argument was that the Medusa doesn't have "Barrage" in it's profile, but he thinks it should, as the Basilisk, Griffon and Colossus all do...

Neither the LRBT or Medusa are barrage weapons.

What a novel argument.

"This non barrage weapon doesn't say it's barrage, so my Battle Cannons must be barrage weapons"

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Cept the medusa isn't a barrage weapon anyway, even the fluff says it.

To clarify, I meant Ted's friend's argument, not yours HoverBoy.

It could be very possible he was confusing barrage for ordnance. When I was starting, I made that mistake a couple times and I can't imagine I'm the only one to have done that.

As with most rule questions, when somebody poses something that sounds odd to you, politely ask them where it says that. You aren't second guessing them, you just never knew about that. One of you learns something that way.
