Firstly, I have been heavily inspired by the blogs of both RazakelXIII and kizzdougs on the Bolter and Chainsword. I love both armies for completely different reasons and they gave me some ideas (and tutorials) for how to do certain things. Unlike both blogs however, I have always seen Word Bearers as primarily robed and covered in excerpts from the Book of Lorgar and have been steadily collecting Dark Angel vets and other suitable gubbins for a few years on the side of other projects.

We are starting a campaign at our excellent FLGS (Cut and Thrust Wargaming in Bristol) to celebrate the release of 6th edition.

My first every 40k army was Word Bearers and I have wanted to return to them for a few years now that most of the army has been piecemealed and sold. However, the current chaos dex didn't really do it for me so after 2 years of tournament playing mainly khorne I moved onto Eldar, SW and dabbled in GK.

However, the upcoming release of the chaos dex has reinvigorated my love of Lorgar's faithful and I want to really do the awesome fluff justice.

My last few armies I have really concentrated on cleaner painting but I want to return to my usual 'grubby' style - lots of washes/OTT blood and gore and OTT conversions.

I consider myself an average painter so please do not expect anything amazing but I hope it will turn out characterful and fun.

This army is focused purely upon models/fluff/fun and is not aiming to be overly competitive.

Anyways, onto some pics.

While they will certainly be Word Bearers, I simple MUST get these guys in somehow for coolness

[

Painting started!

THis guy was a test model really to see if I could get the colour of the robe. The script is a little blocky but it's been a while since I have done this and I think I have it down pat now. One guy died (ie, all went wrong) but this guy is ok. He's not nearly finished yet but I am liking how he is progressing so far.

Once he is done I will get my lightbox sorted and get some proper pictures. What I really like is, apart from wash drying time, this is speed painted and I think I could do 5 in as many hours which is novel for me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have been taken down with a serious case of man-flu today so didn't fancy painting. I did, however, manage to finish assembly for my first CSM squad.

Apologies for the quality of the pics; I will get them in the light box once they're painted and do it properly

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Spent a bit longer on "Testy" today. He's now pretty much done apart from the base. I got a little (ok, a lot) carried away with the clear red but, hey, he's a chaos assault marine. If they can't be covered in blood, who can?

I will tone it down slightly for future models though

First unit complete. Only 5 pictured. I had an absolute nightmare with these guys; got everything done and then completely messed up with the blood as it spilt all over the models. Essentially forced a lumpy repaint.

Was 1 minute away from rage-quitting the hobby but touched them up as well as possible. Unhappy with them overall but at least I have a unit done.

Still struggling to get some better pics; my light box is far too big and my lights far too wimpy.

The first pics don't show the blood well but the 3rd does.

And the whole unit mugshot:

Small update: Squad 2

Of all my complicated conversion ideas, I decided to go for something REALLY out there: another CSM squad! I need to think more about a Galruach/Fateweaver conversion; particularly about different wings and a staff. I thought 2 CSM squads would always be useful regardless of the new codex.

The GS on the leader looks a little weird in the low quality pic but it's fine on the model. I'm quite hapy with the unit so far though they did take a while to put together. Any comments on these? does the mixture of action and more static posing in a single unit work?

Awesome!

Squigsquasher, resident ban magnet, White Knight, and general fethwit.

I really love the gritty, Eternal Darkness type paintscheme you have, it makes the Word Bearers less "angry priests" and more "Crazed religious cultists praising the Dark Gods".

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's a fun army so far and it's going to be big. I am thinking Dark Mech addons, lots of FW and Zealots (cultists) and, when I get 2,5k painted, a chaos Warhound to celebrate

Really wan't happy with the MotC hand so swapped it. When a power sword just is not big enough:

Also, Black Templars are not worthy of this awesome model

Didn't get a chance to paint this weekend but did start my fiends/seeker conversions.

They were a REAL pain the remove the legs fromn the original spiders so the legs could be more splayed. I am kinda happy with them though, for the rest, I want to have their body closer to the floor. On the flipside of this, fiend models are kind of big so it does make some sense for them to be higher.

I need some advice on attaching them to a base though. As you can see from the one on the right, I have had to add a big supporting bar in the middle and I am really unhappy with this - does anyone have any suggestions how this could be achieved without the silly bar? It's impossible to do from the legs as they are so thin.

Reinforcements have arrived!

Blood Slaughterer, Blood Slaughterer Implace and Decimator (all count as dreads at present)

The 2nd CSM squad are also nearly all base coated so they should be done relatively soon.

While doing the 'dreads' looks fun, what I really want to do is a samurai Khorne marine squad - I was going to do a whole army but I couldn't find the bits. Sadly, this means more spends and I really want to stop buying toys randomly and buy a Chaos Warhound or even Reaver instead. Will update with new stuff soon.

I have had lots of ideas for this army so I wanted to put together a list of stuff to do. Obviously this will change with the new codex but I think what I am planning will be pretty safe.

CSM

HQs:

Dark Apostle
Sorcerer: Forgeworld Psyker
Deamon Prince: Based on abaddon model
Deamon Prince: A great conversion I got in a trade
Terminator Lord

Elites:
Chosen Squad
5 Terminators
Blood Slaughterer
Blood Slaughterer Impaler
Decimator

Troops:
2 x 10 CSM
8 Berserkers - Khornate Samurai Marines
8 Thousand Sons - the awesome upgrade packs from Russia
8 Plague Marines - Rogue Trader ones
8 Noise Marines - 2nd edition ones
20 Cultists - Redemptionists
20 Cultists - converted Flagellants

Fast:
10 Bikes
10 Raptors (deamonic)

Heavy:
Landraiders x 3 (already done for old army - just need to Word Bearer them up)
Brass Scorpion - Mainly done - needs updating (did years ago)

Warhound Titan

Deamon Allies:

Bloodthirster (Ultraforge)
Skarbrand - Based on FW Thirster - painted years ago but needs refreshing/repinning
12 Fiends (spider conversions)
3 Deamon Princes
Fateweaver based on Galrauch
20 Horrors
20 Bloodletters

So, it's a HUGE project but I am really enjoying it at present and already have 95% of the above.

These are gorgeous models ! I love just about everything, but your dark chapelain is clearly my favourite model of your.

Just on thing : you may want to finish those models with some matt varnish since some of them look really glossy.

Yep - result of blood problems:( I will be varnishing the rest but I put blood on first for those as I am dumb:(

Just found these. O dear

I will steal your idea of using BT parts for CSM. That's awesome.

Finally getting the 2nd squad of CSM near to completion. I have still to do final touchups, varnish and the blood effect so I will wait until they're complete to get the light box out.

I also reworked my Thousand Sons and Plague marines for some cult funnies. They will both be painted in line with the CSM.

Also, I managed to pick up most of my stuff that was on display at the shop. This was all painted a long time ago and most will be repinned, touched up and bits and pieces redone. The unpainted stuff will be finished asap.
