So reading through the new rulebook, I see that if armed with a pistol and a special close combat weapon, TWC can now choose to attack with their pistol as a CCW weapon with the Rending special rule!

Sadly this does not confer to Canis as he does not have a pistol.

I suppose against terminators the rending would be better than an AP3 power weapon / frost blade. But really id imagine most TWC players use a power fist or TH on their units if you want to optimize, the Str 10 AP2 is too good to turn down.

Well, the Wolf Claw in 5th edition was a better choice against most models. This of course has changed potentially.

Mind you, charging Terminators with Thunderwolves was not a winning strategy previously so I'm not sure why it would be now. Of course, I typically had to deal with a 10 man squad of TH/SS Terminators being Infiltrated by Shrike when I ran into Terminators before. 6th edition should be interesting if this changes.

Canis has two wolf claws. SW codex is explicit as is the FAQ that no attacks made with a special close combat weapon get rending.

Correct. So you have to pick. You can make all of your attacks with the 2 wolf claws, or you can make all of your attacks rending with the model's basic strength.

The core rulebook says that you can only do that if you are not armed with a melee weapon. Canis is armed with two melee weapons so does not have that option. If he was armed like Lukas for example, he would have that option.

But as a Special Charater in he's discription and Army list entry he has Rending. Thus He<Canis> has 2 wolfclaws that rend. RAW.

by this logic the only models on thunderwolves that do not have rending special weapon attacks are the wolf lords/wgbl that have taken the thunderwolf as a mount.

interesting.

heh, no. there is nothing in canis's profile that would make him exempt and TWC not.

regardless after checking it has been FAQ'd for a while now and neither TWC nor Canis get the rending special weapon attacks.
