Right, 6th edition rule book hints that there is something wrong with the Golden Throne, and some of the dates in 6th rulebook are .999M41, what are games workshop going to do next???
Is the imperium going to be thrown into total chaos if the Golden Throne fails? Will holy Terra fall into the clutches of an alien race?

I look forward to hearing some of your ideas

I doubt Games Workshop would let the 40k universe develop as it is as ripe as it will ever get at the moment. Perhaps a few minor things may happen but I don't think they would let the setting progress into the 42nd millenium. They can't really advance anything at all as it would ruin everything and cause a lot of nerdrage.

The setting will not advance. There is currently so much tension, so much that could happen, might happen, that to pick just one or two possibilities could destroy the feeling of the setting. I know people like to see things 'advancing' or 'progressing' but the Warhammer 40,000 setting does not need to advance at all - if they want to tell stories about humanity then they've got several thousand years to set stories/battles/campaigns/crusades etc - 10,000 years of history in a galaxy where humanity roughly has 1 million planets by 999.M41.

The best analogy I can currently think of is it being like a roller-coaster. Every roller-coaster has a massive drop somewhere - all the small bits of the roller-coaster leading up to that drop could be seen as things like the Horus Heresy, Age of Apostasy etc. The big climb to the drop would be the centuries leading up to the 41st millennium. Just as the roller-coaster cart reaches the apex of the tallest part of the track, the brakes are put on. That is where we are currently with the feeling that staying up here with the brakes on is not a bad thing. Perhaps one day Games Workshop will release the brakes and we'll see what happens during the 42nd or 43rd millennia but don't hold your breath waiting for it.

You know what happens when M42 rolls around?

Nothing. It's just a calendar update.

There are 10,000 years between the HH and the End Point of current fluff. There are so many potential events left unexplored within that time frame that 40k doesn't need to move forward.

We might never get to see Abbadon break Cadia, the Eldar fall to ruin or the Tyrannids consume the Eastern Fringe, but we don't need to.

There are equally epic events kicking around those 10,000 years to be explored, go forth and explore!

Thousand Sons Battleship wandering the galaxy...

How about seven centuries from now and psychic Human children on the planet that used to go by the uncouth name of "T'au" listen to a history lesson about how the Emperor came back, kicked the asses out of everyone else in the galaxy, and started a new Golden Age? Ah, good times...

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

40k is a setting.
