I feel I am at a standstill in my painting ability, i can get tabletop quality but I would like to work towards something more.

I know there are a ton of videos on youtube but I find they are typically just time lapse, and dont actually tell you anything. the best you get out of them is a paint list.

I paint for fun basically, I dont play 40K I just paint some of the models (and for other games) so I also don't plan on investing in an airbrush, which seems to be the big push now in the hobby as a "must have tool"

So recommend for me a video series / dvd you feel would help a starting/intermediate painter learn more advanced techniques.

i would check youtube for AwesomePaintJob video's, he uses the airbrush a lot nowadays but also still used brushes

Also, MiniWargamerJ has some really nice new tutorials how to paint with the new citadel paints

Honestly this will probably earn me a lynching on here but I have watched most of AwesomePaintJobs videos and I find them all the same and not very helpful.

Its basically airbrush primer, airbrush base color, airbrush highlight at 45 degree, airbrush light highlight straight down. add a wash. now put on this color, next color, next color etc.

He rarely talks about technique or how hes doing it, and the video is so sped up its hard to glean anything.

I seem to remember him saying he was only ever going to post tabletop quality video tutorials on youtube.

What I recommend you to do: watch all painting videos you can get your hands on. Even the ones you think are not useful to you, you'll find that they'll do a thing or two you will find useful later on. Then collate them in your head: sometimes you find a technique and think it looks dumb or it doesn't work well so you disregard it but if use it yourself it becomes something awesome.

And honestly, you will have a hard time finding videos of how to paint more than above tabletop quality figures, because of the time alone. Those kinds of figures take days and weeks to paint, with occasional breaks--it'll be hard to record that AND describe every tiny little thing you do.

I have found the miniature mentor series highly informative, they show a high level of panting and make it seem totally achievable.
The format is interesting because there isnt one painter showing his stuff, but the dvds have different painters showing their way of doing things. I would highly recommend them.
Also if you are getting into airbrushing the GMM studios Brandon Palmer 7 day army painter is a good dvd for learning a few techniques for fast airbrush weathering on vehicles. The dvds are a little raw in their production values and there is a lot of basic stuff that Brandon explains which I had already learned from internet research but the dvds were worth it imo for learning his technique for shading vehicles ( I fell in love with his blood angel commission)
Also Brandon responded very fast to a query i had about something on his dvd and that was satisfying.

Possibly the official How To Paint Citadel Miniatures guide published by GW? Since the paint change, you'll need to pick up the appropriate edition of the guide (5E or 6E).
Some of it's complete gak, (they don't always use the colours they say they're using, and washes don't work as well as they say they do) but you can pick up one or two tips here and there. The biggest one I learned was to take my time and not try to get it right on the first pass.

I personally wouldn't get too excited about the gw stuff, I have the how to paint books and while they are good for things like how to paint space marine eyes you can easily access this info from sites such as dakka along with numerous other sites.
I would suggest use the web for beginner stuff but when you want to take your painting up a notch and want to see actual how to do, get a good DVD tutorial. Of course you can get advanced stuff of the web as well but a good specific tutorial on hand is great.
also I would support nimble jacks comment about not trying to get it right first pass, it takes time to get your skills up.
My mantra now is " aim for success, not perfection", this has helped me progress quite a bit in getting further with my army, while before I would agonise because something wasn't perfect. And the reality was I would put it down and come back the next day and be surprised with how good it looked.

I've been a subscriber to the Miniature Mentor series for a long time. I may cancel only because they've slowed down their releases and I have so many videos downloaded but the subscription was just SO worth it to be begin with.
