A middle-aged man in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to execution by public beheading after killing two people while ‘drifting’ his car, Reuters reports.

The man, who identified himself to police as “Mutannish,” which is Arabic for “he who ignores,” was engaging in a particularly reckless form of outlaw driving that is popular in the Kingdom and locally known as “Hagwalah.”

In videos posted to YouTube, large crowds are seen gathering by the side of the road to watch drivers skid their cars – often typical family sedans like Honda Accords and Hyundai Sonatas – through traffic at high speeds, sometimes heading in the wrong direction.

Several of the clips show out of control cars crash into the spectators causing serious injury, or even death. One particularly graphic video that surfaced in the internet in May a car rolled through a crowd as several passengers were thrown from vehicle. It has since been removed.

Faced with a growing problem, Saudi authorities are now treating fatalities caused by Hagwalah as negligent homicides, according to Reuters.

In 2005, a naval officer who killed three people in a similar accident was sentenced to death, but had the punishment reduced to 3,000 lashes and 20 years in prison.

It is not clear when Mutannish’s sentence is scheduled to be carried out.

True. I can drive better drunk *and* stoned than most Saudi Arabians I've seen.

This is one of those moments where I question the intelligence of the human species...

I googled up to see if in the states we have had any cases of vehicular manslaughter resulting in the death penalty, and a few have! They tried them under murder it looks like though. I really do not care enough to investigate further. It seems it is a growing problem over there though, I guess this will nip it in the bud!

Fairly sure that's supposed to be spread out over several days, if not weeks. At least that's what was done to some girl who had received a couple hundred lashes, too.

It depends on the whip, though. Some can be lethal with as little as ~20 strokes ... at least I vaguely recall having read that in an article about punishment in the navies during the Age of Sail once.

Sounds like the guy deserves it. Can we also create the same punishment for excessively slow drivers? We had somebody going 25mph in a 45mph zone earlier today. I support those people getting the death penalty too.

A real honest to Gawd sword. Not a long sword or something midevil european blade. An actual sword...like a scimetar but heavy and a bit wide. Seen the results after the fact in Afghanistan when a child rapist was executed. Did not see the execution itself. Also if your a thief you lose your right hand. Now that I have seen

Gotta say, If punishement such as those don't stop you from doing something ridiculously stupid and obviously full of risks, I don't know what will. From an utilitarian point of view, the harshness of the punishment seems pointless. From the point of view of people that don't like stupid homicide, now, that's a different thing...

I believe it's a Shamshir. The ones made from Damascus steel are beautiful. Shame about the function here, though. I'm not really down with public executions.
