Not alot has changed for me since last edition, Devastators, RAS, Scouts and Attack Bikes are essentially the same, or received a small buff/nerf etc. However, challenges and the new shooting has forced me to reconsider the Elite + HQ slot pairing... what do you feel is the most cost effective pairing and why?
Sanguinary Guard:
- 2+ is the new CC hotness.
- Toss in a priest and they are basically flying tactical terminators.
- Hammer of wrath.
- Has to deal with less cover saves and more shooting.
- Works well with Rescularch, Dante and Astro.
- Point range 355- 445.
Sternguard:
- Special Ammo Boltguns + rapid fire changes + overwatch + combi-_____.
- Toss in a priest... and well... they can shot stuff... should cause more wounds then SG on average. A bit more versatile.
- Just as good as Vanilla Sternguard, but with FNP.
- Mediocre at CC, though Tycho+Corbulo could hold their own.
- Works well with Termy/Librarian, Tycho and Corbulo/Priest.
- Point range 275-550.

I've always really preferred Sanguinary Guard due to playing a lot more of a close combat orientated list. Also with the buff to FnP I think that Sanguinary Guard have become a lot more viable. Also with a Reclusiarch or Astorath and Liturgies of Blood they really are quite powerful.
Sternguard just seem quite week in comparison with a 3+5++ save with FNP and will draw a lot of fire (not that SG won't) and will die more easily in comparison.

I wont argue that, I am running a heavier shooty element and at this moment at most 2.5 RAS squads + 5 VV and an unit of Plasma Guard.
One thing I like to point out in this codex is the secret weapon that is Corbulo. Put him in front for best wound allocation it takes something like a average of 120 lasgun shots to take him down, he is a small fire sponge.
I did rekit my Sanguinary Guard last night to be used (didnt find them that attractive last codex vs my Librarian/RAS squads which lost some staying power in comparison). The question I gotta track down in a FAQ is if Astro's weapon counts as a AXE I1 or a unique power weapon.

Personally, I don't think having a Priest attached to an SG is very useful. On the one hand, they will get an extra 5+ roll against small arms fire. But on the other, if your opponent *really* wants to kill them, he's going to fire melta/lance/lascannon/etc at it, which will nullify the FnP anyway.
Seems kind of like a waste for 75 pts.

But the FNP allows them to get into combat with other PW units, such as GKs and stand toe to toe, which before was a death wish.

My current list contains Sternguad and no Sanguinary Suard. I like SG, especially in 6th, but I rely on DC more for the role that I would typically use them in.
Death Company can still run very expensive and they don't have the awesome 2+ save, but they hit like a freight train more than ever and they come with Furious Charge and Feel No Pain already. My Sternguard squad goes in a drop pod with Tycho.

The DC company possibly getting 5 str 5 attacks on the charge each is a interesting option... though since there are relentless rapid fire bolters and still charge?
How do you find Tycho in the role of CC beast?

It will actually take 216 lasgun shots to kill Corbulo, or 324 if he uses his reroll on one of his failed FNP rolls (There by having to actually cause 3 wounds to him)
If it is a space marine with bolters it is either 108 or 162 shots to take him down, again depending on the reroll.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie. |

Tycho is kind of an oddity to me. He is a great character for drop pod assault, and he is better in CC now due to his 2+ save and his CC attacks still ignore armour. But to make him a real CC beast you have to make him DC Tycho, at which point he loses Independent Character.
