Some friends of mine play it, and while I know nothing about it, skirmish games are looking pretty good right now, given my piles of unpainted figs. I have the chance to pick up these in trade:
Samael Hopkins
3 Witchling Stalkers
Sonia Criid
3 Silurid Slaves
Zoraida
Bad Juju
Voodoo Doll
Bishop
Viktoria Sword Mistress
Viktoria Bounty Hunter
Lady Hammerstrike
Johan
3 Ronin
It looks like there is a Guild starter, a Neverborn starter, and some Outcasts figs. Are these fairly decent places to start? I'm not trying to be competitive, but I don't want to get crushed all the time either.

Looks like youve got Sonnia's starter, Zorida's starter plus the voodoo doll, and the Vik's starter plus the ronin. Im not too familiar with Sonnia, but the other two are very solid places to start. You could probably run the Vik's as is and do just fine on the field, but for Zorida you may want to add a couple Stitched Togethers to really make her crew nasty.

I hate to hyjack this thread. I've also looked into malifaux and I'm determining if I want to invest. I only know one other person who plays so I've debated how to do it. I thought I'd invest in 2 army's but I have some questions. Of the four factions I'm avoiding the resurrectionists because both my empire and vc are already dead. I'm drawn to the neverborne. Looking at the box sets the two following look fun to paint. Kaeris and Pandora. How do these perform? Also will I have to buy 2 decks if I'm playing someone without a deck? Or is one sufficient?

Pandora has something of a steep learning curve (depending on who you ask) but is a really solid and dangerous master once you know what youre doing. She can spam willpower duels all over the place and losing them means taking damage and granting her free moves.
Kaeris is pretty cool. ive only ever played against her once, but the general idea with her is putting tokens on people and then getting those tokens to blow up. i'd tell ya more if i could, but no one in my immediate area plays her.
As for the fate decks, youll need one per player - tho in a pinch you can use a regular deck of cards. it does get a little confusing tho trying to remember which suit is which with a regular deck of cards.

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and took the trade - looks like I will take some of the Malifaux (and some MERCS I just picked up) with me to GenCon, and see if I can get someone to teach me how to play.

Just hit up the Wyrd booth, they should be running demos pretty much full time.

Marked it on the map, so I'll find time to stop by.
Got the figs yesterday, and I must say, they are nice. I did not get the rules are part of the trade, but I'll pick up a rulebook at GenCon anyway.

it's funny, because what you got amounts to an easy to grasp crew, a middle of the road crew, and an advanced crew.
The easiest to understand and play right from the start is the viktorias. There isn't a whole lot of synergy in that crew, just a bunch of really solid models.
Sonnia's crew isn't that hard to play, but the trick with her is knowing exactly when to cheat down those big cards in your hand, as well as managing soulstones properly. She's got some amazing anti-magic capability, some really strong blasts, and a damaging spell that summons a really good minion if it kills. Don't use the cards in your hand and you might not be able to get off some of her beefier spells, but if you don't keep some cards back, you won't be able to use her counterspelling.
Lastly you have Zoraida. Of the sets you mentioned, it's the one that requires the most solid grasp of the rules. Zoraida relies not so much on kicking the crap out of the opposing crew, but on manipulating them to do it for her. That being said, once you have it down, she can be frustrating to your opponent, who'll start feeling like they've lost control of their own crew (which, incidentally, they will have if you're doing it right)
hope some of this helped.

Yeah, that's a big help, actually. As I said, I think I will take one with me to GenCon, and see if I can learn how to play the game.
I was thinking of picking up Som'er Teeth Jones at the con as well - one of my favorite WM/H armies is the pigs, and I like the look of the bayou figs.
