Basically I'm getting a bit bored and disgruntled with my empire.
I'm almost the only shooting army in my local area and even though I run a mixed list I don't think my opponents appreciate walking halfway across the board, getting blown up then charged.
So I'd thought I'd mix it up a bit an pick a more combat orientated army.
Prime choice is beastmen. I'm drawn in by minotaurs although I don't particularly want a huge number of figures which from the searches I did, beastmen seem to want.
Other choices that are moving around in my head is O&G just for the wackyness. Probably would go for a lot of spiders here when thinking about special choices. Lizardmen seem a nice choice which no one in my area plays but I can't get my head around wanting to play them really. I like their models, their units, their fluff but seem to have a block about wanting to play them. If I did lizards probably end up with a lot of creature artillery.
I don't play tounements (hate the attitude I found at them) but I'd like to be able to win with them.
If you play one of those 3 armies could you give me a run down on the style I'd be going for works well/is diffucult to pull off/one trick pony/ etc. Would really appreciate it.
I'd welcome any other suggestions too.

Lizards are awesome but I'm biased!
Beastmen would have lots of chaos conversion potential.
Also what is your avatar from?

If you like Minotaur go with the Beastmen. And no you don't need lots and lots of troops if you don't want to. I would recommend the minobus 3 gorebull/doombull mix in front rank of a unit of minotaur providing supporting attacks. For core since you need a 25% minimum you could use ungor raiders and tuskgor chariots, other recommendations are single razorgor, harpies and even our Ghorgons which are minotaur like. Now it isn't the most competitive build but it is fun and you will win.

Hargus, I like the sound of that but sounds like that's a lot of points in a single unit that can be redirected. In your opinion would MSU of minotaurs work?

I vote Beastmen. I really dont think that MSU mino's would work, but what you could do is run them up the middle of your line (you want to do this no matter what) and have them flanked by either Gor or Chariots. And you don't have to put to many points into it for it to be effective, 5 Mino's and a Doombull recently was all that OnceBitten needed to get himself 2nd place at a 2day 5 game event.

MSU minos do not work, go hard or go home bro its minobus or bust, that said re-rollabled LD 8 will keep you on the route you want to go down. Screening units of harpies and raiders would be serious help too

MSU as said probably won't work the downside to regular minotaur is their low Toughness of 4, as long as you have enough chaff and anti redirectors you should be fine. If you were interested you could start with the following:
1 Battalion
3 Boxes Minotaur
1 box of ungor
1 box of gor-maybe
a shaman model malagor or dark emissary (though you would need the larger 25mm base for him)
10 Orc Boars and some Chaos Spawn Bitz
Harpies - converted is fine
Some random bitz and plasticard to make chariots
So this gives you your 3 gorebulls and doombulls, with 6 supporting minotaur. Custom chariots you can make with gor and bestigor crews 6-7 would be a good number mostly to full up core requirements but they'd be fun too. For redirectors and general chaff you would have 4 units of 5 raiders, 1-2 units of 5 harpies and 2-3 single razorgors using pigs and chaos bitz. Then you would also have a 14-24 unit of gor to bunker your Greater Bray Shaman in. If you were so inclined you could also add in a couple of ghorgons

Flicking through the book I only just noticed it's only the hero/lord minos that are T5. Darn.
Thanks Hargus for the list, I might give that a go although I'm not really a fan of a deathstar. Seems too many points to invest in a single unit.

If you run Empire now (like I do) then you would see more of a change if you went O&G. Those are the two armies I play and because they are on different ends of the spectrum you would really appreciate playing them. They're really fun to play, easy to paint, and have more versatility than just about any other Army out.

Beastmen are a fun army, but they take time to master. I never field Ungors, since they are not worth the points. I rather take Gors and use hounds as redirectors. MSU of Minos dont work, I never run them in smaller units than 6 with a Doombull. But then again I only play big games with them, and I moved on recently to Ogres.
However as Beastmen you get some rather effective core troops, Gors will always deal out the pain and are rather cheap too. Chariots I dont have much experience with so I dont know about them really

Interesting Trond, I find raiders better then hounds for that roll, skirmishers with ranged attacks, on top of that primal fury and they count toward the minimum core requirement where hounds do not.

I run large blocks of Gors so minium core is not a issue, and I dont like the raider moddels in addition. And the few potetinal kill shots from raiders have never worked for me, but is also to be noted I have horridly bad ranged rolls thou.

I have played Beastmen for years and am starting an O&G army as we speak. Beastmen are fun, I play very aggressive and it suits my play style, I field large blocks of Gor with a few chariots, raiders and pigs as my chaff. I also run Bestigor for hitting power instead of Minos.. Primal fury str 6 WS 4 attacks are good at killing most things. In my O&G I can still be aggressive but also have some ability to whittle away at opponents from afar, something Beatsmen seriously lack. I enjoy both and model wise there are many conversion opportunities in both armies.
