I like to think I'm brilliant, but I found this idea somewhere on the web.
Instead of glueing the figures to the bases and then paint them, I glued them on a long stick and mass-produced them. Took me about 2 hours to paint these 32 figures in 4 colours. Should be about 7-8 bases of russians.
I first did 16 bases the normal way and took me about 2-3 days of painting. I'm not a fast painter, nor do I have much experience, but for the russian horde-army, I needed desperate measures!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Advice 1: use less glue than normal! I split one base in half when taking it off the wood. Not so bad it can't be repaired, but I will use less glue next time.

I use cut-out 3x5 index cards (in squares) and use PVA glue to glue the models down.

The index card allows me to move the model around at all angles to allow my brush to paint it while just holding the corners of the card. I can bend it if need be.

Doesn't take long; i've knocked out 20 artillery crewman this way in a few hours.

I've seen people do this trick. A suggestion is to use something besides normal glue to attach'em to the stick. Wither hot glue or that blue poster putty...

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

i just use a small dab of super glue. Never had a problem with getting them off.

I use blue tac (it's like poster putty). I don't use a stick though, I usually just put each figure on a penny or a small piece of cardboard, so I can manipulate each figure individually. I find that to be a bit easier than having to work with a long stick full of miniatures, but either option definitely makes for easier painting than basing them first.

Undercoating: I use my excalibur. A rather long peace of wood. covered in double-sided sticky tape. Sick models, Spray, unstick models.

Painting: I usually 90% of the time attach whatever im painting to the top of a old GW Paint pot with blue-tac. For smaller items. (as in tiny...) Pinned to a paperclip, then hold the paperclip in a small vice. Gives me something large and solid to hold while still being able to manupilate the mini.
