Subject: Lead Legion's 40K Blog - Heresy World Eater Army Showcase
My local wargaming group recently began an Escalation style League to reintroduce a lot of "lapsed" 40K gamers back into the hobby. Given that my IG Chimera list is pretty much nerfed by hullpoints and 5+ smoke saving throws, I was faced with a dilemma: spend 200 quid on new miniatures for a competitive IG foot list or spend the same amount of money on a new army. Then this League came along and made up my mind for me.
My first 500pt list:
HQ:
Chaos Lord with Poweraxe and Mark of Khorne. Cost: 115.
TROOPS:
5 Chaos Space Marines. 1 has Plasmagun. 90 points.
5 Chaos Space Marines. 1 has Plasmagun. 90 points.
5 Khorne Berserkers. 105 points.
Heavy Support:
Chaos Dreadnaught with Multi-melta and close combat arm. 100 points
Total: 500 points.
And here's the finished Test Figure for my Chaos Warband. You don't see many Chaos armies with a white colour scheme, so i thought it would stand out a but in the crowd of red's, blue's and black's (not to mention ichor-leaking gooey plague marines) you normally see on the tabletop. I haven't settled on a Warband symbol YET, so the shoulder pads are being left undecorated for now. I have decided that even CSM sworn to specific power will wear the normal white colour-scheme, although their shoulder pads will be painted in a colour that determines which of the Warband's Power-aligned Warrior Lodges they belong too.
Finally, here's the Dreadnaught I finished yesterday, a captured Imperial model which has been re-purposed by the Warband. I'm really hoping that the new Codex will allow Daemonic-Possession for Dreadnaughts. The right leg looks a little bare at present. I'll fix that as soon as I work out what the Chapter symbol is going to be. I also decided not to remove the purity seal on the melta-arm. The shtick for my warband is that they are a Black Legion spin-off that, disgusted by Horus's failure and Abbaddon's incompetence have gone back to the traditions and doctrines of the old Luna Wolves chapter, with the Powers of Chaos replacing the Emperor as the saviour of humanity from Xenos and Superstition (by which I mean the Ecclesiarchy).

Subject: Chaos Space Marine Esclalation League Project.
Been a while since I updated this thread so apologies for the threadomancy. My army has grown a bit since I last posted here, so please bear with me.
I've completed painting my Chaos Space Marine squads for the Escalation League, although I plan on running it as a single squad in larger games. I wasn't happy with the Plasma Guns after seeing this photograph - I normally highlight the plasma coils up to white but for some reason I'd forgotten to do it before taking the photo! This is actually one of the main reasons why I take photographs of a customers miniatures before posting them. It gives me a last minute chance to pick up on any errors or omissions before I mail them out.
I've also been working on my Daemon Prince of Tzeentch conversion. The original model is absolutely gorgeous, but tends more towards Khorne in appearance. To remedy this, I've removed the tail, thw wings and the left hand from the miniature. Because the Daemon already has a weapon-port like orifice on his left hand, leaving the hand unattached make the left arm very similar in appearance to that of another Tzeentchian Daemon sub-type know (to us old geezers anyway) as a Flamer of Tzeentch. I debated removing the axe and replacing it with a Staff, but on balance decided against it. This guy is supposedly (in my army background) a Chaos Space Marine Sorcerer "elevated" to Daemon Princedoom. So it could quite easily represent his old Force Axe.
Nominally, he's a "winged" creature but there's a couple of problems with that. The wings provided with the miniature are huge, heavy, and tend to get in the way a lot during the game. Luckily, Tzeentchian armies used to be famous for using hovering, disc-shaped creatures with the brains and temperaments of Great White Sharks for mounts. So, I decided to scratch-build a giant Disc of Tzeentch and flying base as an alternative source of "flight" for the Daemon. Likewise, to represent him when his feet are fixed firmly on the ground (such as when he's inevitably shot down ("grounded" in 40K terms) I've got a nifty non-flying base for him as well.
Like most of my GW miniatures, this one was bought second hand and then stripped using Fairy Power Spray. However, the previous owner was clearly a far better builder and converter than I am. I carefully removed the original base prior to stripping the Daemon Prince of paint and simply painted over the original primer (the previous owner had clearly never gotten round to finishing the base). The ground base is NEARLY finished. I just need to paint a Blood Raven symbol on the half-buried marine corpse.
I have a game coming up soon with my friend and fellow Chaos-of-the-Warp co-host, Liam. Liam's being filming a series called 50 games in 50 weeks on Youtube, and I'm slated for game 44 a week on Thursday . So far he's played many more games than he's uploaded to Youtube; game 33 went up recently. Given that I spend so much time painting other peoples miniatures, I'm having to work overtime to get my army ready for the game. So you'll probably see a lot more of my own figures over the next week or so than you normally would, interspersed with miniatures from customers.
feth yeah that is fething awesome. The red and white contrast really nice, and that old style Chaos Terminator is more badass than a Donkey that refuses to let anyone ride it. I especially liked the usage of Genestealer claws on the Berzerkerz.

I had a squad of old Terminators, but my dog randomly decided they were tasty. The dog needed dental work, and most of the Terminators were ruined. Sighhhhhh...

Good point. Here's some bigger ones. The photo quality isn't that great I'm afraid. The red is actually orange, if you see what I mean, and the top level of highlights isn't showing either.
My wife normally takes all the photographs for the website, but she's looking after her mother at the other end of the country right now.

Subject: Esclalation League Project- on to Sons or Orar.
Recently finished my first test figure for a Sons or Orar Vanilla Space Marine army, couldn't decide on the slightly weathered look or a pristine look so I asked my customers which they preferred. Overwhelmingly, the choice was for the near-pristine version. So I washed off all the weathering powder apart from the soot around the weapon's ejection port and armour's vents.
Unweathered:
Weathered:
Since then I've gone to paint Sgt Telion (or however his name is spelled) and a Company Champion. I even decided that I like the Sons or Orar colour scheme so much that I'm going to paint my poor, neglected, Epic miniatures in the same colour scheme.
Finished my first combat squad for the Sons of Orar. I like the idea of them being Plasma gun heavy, not because I intend to use the upcoming Dark Angels codex, but because 1/2 my opponents at tournaments are likely to be power armour armies. I try to avoid loyalist marine vs loyalist marine games for fluff reasons (I'm a bit of a puritan that way) and for casual games at home or at clubs, I tend to pick a codex that would logically be having a scrap with my opponents army.
Technically, this is supposed to be the place for the 40K miniatures I paint for myself, not customers. But I'm working on a really exciting (well excting for me anyway) commission at the moment and thought I'd share it here. I have a whole army of these guys to paint on behalf of a customer and once I've cleared out my Chaos Dwarf Blood Bowl team order and my Classic pre-slotta Goblin commission, I'll be concentrating exclusively on these guys for the next few weeks.
So here he is, my first Horus Heresy World Eater.

For whatever unknown reason, I never got round to putting up all the images of the Horus Heresy World Eater army I painted back at the start of the year. Here they are now:

I'm getting back to my roots here by posting some miniatures that belong to the actual project I started this blog for: my Chaos Space Marines.
They've undergone a few fluff changes since I first started this blog. They're now an off-shoot of the Word Bearers rather than Traitor Blood Ravens, hence the new shoulder pads. I also got bored with the old Tzeentchian theme of the list, and have gradually been introducing more Khorne elements into the mix.
Most of this army has been finished for a good eight or nine months, but I never got around to posting all of it. I'll have to fix that soon. For now, here are some odds and ends I painted recently.
First up, I've decided to expand my force to two Biker units. This gives me the option of fielding two Jugger-Lords or Khorne in some of my games, each with their own Biker escort. I know most people use Spawn as ablative wounds for their mounted Lords, but I just love Chaos Bikers.
Next up, I finally got around to expanding the 5 man Khorne Berserker Squad from the early days of the Escalation league to a ten man squad. I sometimes use these guys in the Land Raider now, swapping out my old faithful possessed. The plan is to expand these guys to a 2 man unit and deploy them on foot.
Finally, here's a succession of Champions for swapping out with my current units. I got sick of losing my CSM Aspiring Champion with PF to challenges so I painted up a standard version. He's the guy on the far left. Next to him is the new Khornate Possessed Champion. The guy in the middle is my standard Berserker Champion with PFist and Lightning Claw. To his right are two other Berserker Champ options: one with PFist, the other with PFist and Plasma Pistol

Okay. I lied. I said I was only going to be posting up miniatures I painted for myself, but I've already shown photographs of the rest of the client's World Eater army, so I may as well post up images of the new additions here as well:
Forge World Rampagers.
I really need to persuade the missus to start taking photographs for me again. These guys looks far, far better in person. I wish I could do them proper justice with a camera.

Here are the (probably very last) of the Horus Heresy World Eaters I painted for a client. That's him up to 2000pts, so I can't see him wanting any more for a while. At least not until he has a good few games under his belt.
These guys represent two ten-man additions to the customer's existing ten-man tactical squads. Which is why there are no command figures among them.
So after this post, it's back to posting up photographs of my own miniatures. That said, I keep forgetting to put them up here when they're finished, so I've created a bit of a back-log for myself.
