Hello everyone. I'm starting fantasy (having given up on 40k until they write a decent SM codex which wasn't done by matt ward).
I would like some advice in choosing my units. I have chosen Vampire Counts as my army, but are yet to buy any model. Would you please
help me decide on what to get (keeping in mind that this is a gaming army, and that i live in Aust, and that i have $300 to spend)

I do not know about costs but to try and help financially, let as do a breakdown.
We will start with Core:
Zombies, need a LOT of them if you use them. Not just for what you can field but for what you can add to a unit. They can always be increased beyond their starting size by invocation and get 2d6+ caster level. (other core gets 1D6)
Skeletons, you do not need AS much but you still need a lot as they are weak and die in droves (as do zombies) you get back 1D6+ caster level from invocation, however unless you have a necromancer with master of the dead, they cannot be increased beyond starting.
Ghouls (for you the best option) expensive for core (10 points a model) so you need less than of the other two options listed to fill out your core. Get 1D6+ caster level back (but cannot increase beyond starting size so do not need more than you brought with you)
Dire Wolves, You will not really need more than one box of these. Make two units of 5, use them as redirectors.
Next Specials:
Corpse Cart, decent but you probably will not need it.
Hex Wraiths, not hard hitting enough for a hammer unit, but decent utility (you only get 1 from invocation because of ethereal)
Black Knights, They have their ups and downs (you only get back 1+caster level from invocation)
Grave Guard, Your bread and butter. You want 30 of these. With Great Weapons. (You get back 1D6+caster level from invocation)
Vargheists, too expensive (money wise $50 for 3 models)
Crypt Horrors (see Vargheists, same kit)
Spirit Hosts, worth it as redirectors. 4 attacks, 4 wounds, ethereal? Yes please. No reason to field more than two and each on their own, not in a unit.
Rares:
I love my Terrorgheists but unless you bring two, you will have issues and they are expensive.
Varghulf, get at least 1 of these.
Black Coach, very fun if you have one
Blood Knights, too expensive ($100 for a box of 5) or you could get a box of Warriors of Chaos knights and convert (lots of converting but cheaper)
Lords and heroes:
You want at least 3 models. 1 for sure Vampire, 1 for sure Necromancer, and 1 of either. Then play with making one a Vampire Lord, or one a master necromancer, I dunno just find what you like. (I like a Vampire Lord and two necromancers)
I think I left some stuff out but this is what will get you started... I think.
